The Lord Jesus came to do the will and the works of the Father. Jesus did what He saw the Father do. We are called to do the Father's works, just like Jesus.

In this message our goal is to (A) Learn What Jesus Taught About The Father's Works (B) Discover How Jesus Walked With The Father and (C) Learn how we can walk with the Father and Do His Works.

This message is really a preparation for the season we will be entering into as a church, during the months of July-September. During Jul-Sep, will be learning, practicing and equipping ourselves in the area of "Ministering healing and deliverance".

The Four Gospels
The four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) all tell us the same story, but from four different viewpoints and to four different audiences.

The gospel of Matthew was written by a Jew (Matthew, a Galilean Jew also called Matthew the tax collector), about a Jew, to other Jews, to show that in Jesus of Nazareth is found the fulfillment of all Messianic prophecy. There are more than forty Old Testament passages quoted in Matthew in connection with events of the life of Christ.

The gospel of Mark was written to a Roman audience. In the book of Mark Christ is presented as the ideal servant.

Luke, a physician, Luke has the distinction of being the only Gentile writer in the Bible. Luke sets forth the humanity of the Son of Man and presents in chronological order the life of Christ. Luke set out to be detailed in his writings.

The whole purpose of the gospel of John was to show the Deity of Jesus Christ. Instead of giving the genealogy of Christ, John goes back into eternity. He captures how the Lord Jesus, as the incarnate Son of God, walked with the Father, seeing, hearing and doing what the Father desired.

In this Study, we will spend much of our time in the Gospel of John, to learn from Jesus concerning the Father's Works.

What Jesus Taught About The Father's Works
The Lord Jesus came to do the Father's business (Luke 2:49)
He came to do the Father's Will (Hebrews 10:5-7)
He came in the Father's name (John 5:43).
He revealed Sonship glory, "as of the only begotten of the Father" (John 1:14)
He called the Temple "my Father's house" and demonstrated that healings were to be carried out in the Father's house (John 2:16, Matthew 21:12-14).
Part of doing the Father's Works was to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8)

A Greater Witness Than The Prophet
John 5:36 But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish the very works that I do bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.

The Lord Jesus pointed to the works of the Father as a greater witness (testimony, proof, evidence) to who He is, than the testimony of John the Baptist, the greatest of the Old Testament prophets.

In fact, when John the Baptist doubted, the Lord Jesus pointed to the works of the Father, as evidence (Matthew 11:1-5).

Healing the blind man - doing the works of God

John 9:1-7
1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.
2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
6 When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.
7 And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

When the Lord Jesus saw a man born blind (sick, diseased, etc.) He saw it as an occasion for the works of the Father to be revealed in that person. Not that God made him blind, but that God, through healing his blindness would reveal His works.

Jesus said I must work the works of Him who sent me, in other words, I must do the Father's works. And clearly, it was the Father's work to make the blind man to see.

We must seize the opportune moment...do the Father's works now, while it is day.

We also learn that the way the Father's works are administered can vary. In this case, Jesus spat on the ground, made a paste put it on the blind man's eyes and sent him to wash in the pool of Siloam. He did not follow this procedure for every blind person He healed.

The Works I Do Bear Witness of Me

John 10:25 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me.
John 10:32 Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"
John 10:33 The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."
John 10:37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
John 10:38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."

The Lord Jesus once again emphasizes the importance of the works of the Father, to the Jews. He even makes this shocking statement in vs 37 that if I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me.

Believe Me for The Sake of The Works
John 14:1-12
John 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
John 14:11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
John 14:12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

To His own disciples, Jesus challenges them to believe in Him, because of the works..."..believe Me for the sake of the works themselves".

We will discuss John 14:12 later, but it important to notice the context in which it was given. John 14:12, the promise that every believer will do the Father's works, was given to authenticate who Jesus is.

Seeing The Works Leaves Us With No Other Option
John 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.

The works of the Father, is essentially a 'final conclusive proof' about Jesus Christ.

How Jesus Walked With The Father

How did Jesus walk with the Father? What was His relationship with the Father? We need to press in to walk in a similar manner with the Father.

In the bosom of the Father
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

To be "in the bosom" means to be "in the intimate presence" (Amplified Bible).
The Lord Jesus walked in the intimate presence of the Father. We see Him spend much time alone with the Father (Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16; Luke 6:12; John 6:15)

It was out of this intimate walk with the Father, that He revealed the Father. The Amplified Bible states: "He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known".

John 3:35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.
The reason the Father could leave all things in His (the Son's) hand, is because the Son was so aligned to the Father and would never do anything that displeased the Father.

John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
Jesus said that His food (nourishment, sustenance) was to do the will and finish the work of the Father who sent Him.

The Healing of the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda

After the healing of the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5:1-14, the Lord Jesus explained several things about why and how He did the Father's works. This gives us insight on how He walked with the Father.

John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."

The healing of the crippled man, was simply a work of the Father. Jesus said that He was simply co-laboring with the Father. The ministry of healing, deliverance and miracles - supernatural ministry - is simply co-laboring with the Father. The Father is working and so do we. The only time we stop, is when He stops, and as far as we know, He has not stopped working!

John 5:19
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

Jesus yielded Himself to the Father, in such a manner, that He did not act on His own accord. He followed what He saw the Father doing.

John 5:20
20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

Doing the works and greater works depends on us seeing what the Father is doing, and doing in like manner. We need to pray and ask the Father to show us greater works than what we have seen till today, that people may see, hear, experience and marvel.

His Doing

In all of His doing, He was yielded to the Father.
John 5:30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

John 8:29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."

John 10:32 Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"
The works He was doing, were works He was releasing "from" the Father.

His Teaching

In all His teaching He taught what He learned from the Father.

John 7:14-16
14 Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
15 And the Jews marveled, saying, "How does this Man know letters, having never studied?"
16 Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

John 8:26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him."
John 8:28 Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.
John 8:38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father."

John 12:49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.
John 12:50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."

I Live Because of the Father

There are many other statements that Jesus made to show how closely He walked with the Father.

John 6:57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, ....

John 8:54 Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God.

John 10:15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; ....

John 10:17 "Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.

John 10:30 I and My Father are one."

John 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

John 12:27 "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
John 12:28 Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again."

John 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

John 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

John 16:32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Walking With The Father, And Doing The Father's Works

We are called to fellowship (communion, intimate relationship) with the Father, with the Son and with the Holy Spirit. 1 John 1:3 , 2 Corinthians 13:14

Sent To Do The Father's Works
John 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
We've been sent to do the Father's works, just as Jesus did.

Doing Greater Works
Jesus said that we would do greater works John 14:12

Lets press in to walk as He walked with the Father and doing the Father's works
We are called to walk with the Father, just as the Lord Jesus walked with the Father (1 John 2:6). The Father loves us just as He loved Jesus (John 16:26,27; John 17:23). Jesus expected that each time He prayed to the Father, it will be granted (John 11:41,42; John 6:11). He always expected His prayer to be answered. God invites us to walk in this same manner - that every time we pray, our prayer will be answered.
