Welcome to Living Supernaturally, we're so glad that you could be here today on our daily devotion. Even as we look into God's word, we do so because we want to learn God's word and also apply it daily in our lives. We've been studying about the gifts of the spirit and understanding different facets of the gifts of the Spirit. Today, we look at how the gifts of the Spirit are to edify people and to glorify the Lord Jesus. The gifts of the Spirit must be pursued with this motivation that it is to edify the people whom we serve with the gifts and it is also with the intent of glorifying or lifting up the name of the Lord Jesus. So, that should be our overall motivation. Let's look at a couple of scriptures. 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 7 says, ‘but the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.’ This manifestation of the Spirit which is the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to each one- every believer and the objective is this for the profit of all. It's for the benefit of everyone. So, it's not to put down a person, it's not to destroy a person, it's not to make a person look bad but it's to benefit, it's for the good of the believer. So, at the same time we can say that the gifts of the Spirit are not a label, the gifts of the Spirit are not some trophies to be displayed, it is not for our fame or reputation, it's not to build a person in terms of popularity or reputation or fame or so on but it is to edify people. Now that should really humble us, keep us humble, keep us grounded and be the reason for which we should pursue the gifts of the Spirit. Let's look at one more verse. 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and verse 12, it says, "Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to accept." Again, a reminder that it should be for the edification of the church. The word edification means to build up spiritually or ongoing, constructive spiritual progress of a person or a group of people. It says let it be for the edification of the believers that you seek to excel. So, we see that there is no other motive, there is no other reason for us or a hidden agenda for us to pursue the gifts or to minister in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Be it prophecy, be it word of knowledge, it's not to make us look good, it's not to validate us or build something for us. The other thing that we see is that the Lord Jesus needs to be glorified. It's not to lift up the person but to lift up the Lord Jesus. The Holy Spirit is always lifting up or building up and glorifying the name of the Lord Jesus. As we see in the Lord teaching the disciples about the Holy Spirit in John chapter 16 and verse 14, He says, "He will glorify me." And He's referring to the Holy Spirit. And so, in our ministering, in our pursuit of wanting to minister in the gifts of the Spirit, this should be our motivation that people be edified and the Lord Jesus be glorified. Shall we pray? Father, we thank you, we pray that you would cleanse us, that you would refine us and purify our motives for ministering in the power and the presence of your Holy Spirit. Father God, we pray let people be edified, let people be nurtured, let the church be edified even as we minister in the gifts of the Spirit. And Lord, we pray in everything that we do, let your name be glorified, you be lifted up, we thank you, in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
