Greetings and thank you so much for joining us today in our daily devotional. This week, we are looking at the priestly garments which God prescribed for the priesthood in the Old Testament. We are drawing a parallel with us as New Testament believers, who are called holy and royal priests unto God, called to offer up spiritual sacrifices but we are drawing some insights from the garments that God prescribed for the priesthood and trying to understand what that means for us as New Testament believers. We saw the innermost garment was the white linen that the priest wore and on top of that, he wore a blue robe again stretching from the neck all the way down to the ankles. Interestingly, at the end of the robe, God told them to hang bells and pomegranates meaning it was a design made of bells and pomegranates, hanging on the edge of the blue robe. The reason God gave to the people why He wanted the bells was so that when the priests walked into the holy place and into the most holy place, this was a sound indicating that he was serving God. As he moved and walked into the holy place and moved into the most holy place, because the people couldn’t enter, his movements caused sound and the people knew that the priest was doing his work. If ever, God didn’t accept the priest’s sacrifices and for whatever reason, he was struck dead, there would be no sound and the people would know for some reason that God had not accepted the priest. But there was a reasoning behind having the bells and pomegranates attached to the edge of the blue robe. Blue in the bible is talking to us about what is divine and of God. The bells and pomegranates are signifying to us of two things- bells talking about the sound/ expression of spiritual service happening. Without the bells, people didn’t know that spiritual service or that the priest was doing anything inside. The pomegranates of course are speaking to us of fruitfulness; it is a figure of fruitfulness. We understand this in the New Testament, that Jesus has called us, He says, He is the vine and we are the branches and He says, my Father is glorified if you near much fruit. So, He has called us to be fruitful and show forth the praises of our God, that means our priestly ministry is a ministry that expresses and makes known the service that we render to God. While it is being done in the secret place (most holy place), there is a recognition that we are the priests of God and we are people who offer up spiritual sacrifices unto God. So, the robe, bells and pomegranates are worship of God, something that is pure and divine that comes from God. It is not an earthly thing that we are offering to God, there is fruitfulness in it and there is a clear expression/ visible expression of our worship to God. Though done in secret, people know that we are the priests of God involved in worship of God.

Let’s pray, Father, we thank you that you have called us to be holy and royal priests. As we engage in our priestly ministry, let us offer to you what is divine and what comes from you. Help us to be very fruitful in our ministry and help us to offer ministry that is known by people, it is recognized. Though done in secret, people know that we are the priests of the Most high God, that we do show forth the praises of the one who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light and may we shine that light in this world, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
