One Thing - You Alone O Lord.. (Daily Devotional)

Hello and welcome back, welcome to Living Supernaturally, the daily devotion of All People's Church. We're so glad that you could be here as we study God's word together, meditate, and apply God's word in our lives. This whole series, we've been looking at this phrase ‘one thing’ wherever it occurs, and also the psalmist, making this claim ‘you alone’. And so, we are looking at one more phrase, that one more scripture portion where the psalmist says, "You alone. You alone, O Lord." We're looking at Psalm chapter 4, verse 8, where the psalmist says, "I will both lie down in peace and sleep. For you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Now, as we look at Psalm chapter 4, we see that the psalmist is crying out to God, and it's all based on what has happened in the past and he's thanking God, and he's declaring it and he's saying, "Lord, when I was in distress, Lord, you came through, he says, "You enlarged me." You came through and he rebukes his adversaries who came after him, and who spoke false things against him, and so on. And so, we understand that situation, the things that he's going through, the circumstances that are happening in his life, they are tough ones, they're difficult ones, people are coming after him, and so on. But he comes to this place knowing who God is. In fact, we should look at verse 6, it says, "There are many who say, 'Who will show us any good?'" And he says, "Lord, lift up the light of your countenance upon us." Verse 7, ‘you have put gladness in my heart more than in the season that their grain and wine increased’. So, he's saying, "God, you have done something in me.” They've had a great harvest in the natural, things are fine with them, they are prospering, but Lord, you have done something in me. You have put gladness in my heart and he's saying, "Yes, things haven't changed, there are people who are hunting me, and there are people who are speaking ill of me, there are people who are coming against me.” But he says, "I will both lie down in peace and sleep." Sleep is a precious commodity, especially when we are going through times which are difficult, especially when we go through times which are stressful, and we are unable to sleep because our mind is on overdrive, our thoughts just prevent us from resting. But here he says, "I will both lie down in peace and sleep." Peaceful sleep, peaceful rest, a mind which is completely at rest. He gives the reason and he says, "For you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." So, the psalmist understands it is the Lord who is his strength. It is the Lord and not his own strength. It is the Lord and not the army which can provide him safety. It is the Lord and not his weapons, the natural weapons of sword and spear, which can provide safety. It is the Lord. So, he says, "Lord, you make me dwell in safety." May we come to that place of acknowledging who God is, for everything proceeds from Him. May our trust be in God first and foremost. May we put our trust in Him, may our strength be in Him, may our faith be in Him and let that overflow into all areas of our life. Shall we pray? Father, we thank you, Lord, we thank you that you are good. We thank you that you are our strength and like the psalmist, we want to say for you alone, O Lord, make us lie down in peace and sleep. For you alone, God, are our God. You are our strength. Yes, master, we want to acknowledge that and we pray that for each and every one who is listening and learning from this, that you will lead us in peace, that you will enable us to rest in peace, even in the midst of confusion and stressful times and stressful circumstances, that you will enable us, Lord, to rest well with your peace, the peace that comes from the prince of peace and lead us into all that you have for us, we thank you, in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
