One Thing - One Thing Is Needed (Daily Devotional)

Hello and welcome, you're watching Living Supernaturally, the daily devotion of All People's Church. Hope you've been having a good week so far. And today, as we've been doing this week, we've been studying about the occurrence of this phrase ‘one thing’ in the Bible. There are few places where this phrase comes, ‘one thing’, and it's interesting where it occurs, who says it, to whom, and also the lessons that we can learn from that whole incident and that instruction or conversation. Today, we're looking at Luke chapter 10, verses 41 and 42. In Luke chapter 10, towards the end of the chapter, we see that the Lord Jesus goes to the house of Mary and Martha and he is there, and obviously a lot of people have come with him, and they are there in the house, and so, Martha goes to the Lord, and she complains and says, "Don't you care that my sister has left me to care to serve all by myself?" To which the Lord responds, and I'm reading from verse 41, "And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." When we read through the incident, we might think "What is wrong with Martha's request?" There are people around, there's work to be done, there's responsibilities, and so what is wrong with her request? But the Lord's response shows where Martha's heart was. The Lord is saying, "You are worried and troubled about many things." Now, we need to understand that there are needs and the Lord is saying one thing is needed. A need is something that is essential, that's a requirement, there is a necessity and the Lord here is saying, "One thing is needed, one thing is a requirement, one thing is a necessity and it is essential." And He's talking about that and saying, "What you receive from me, what you receive from my presence, that is a need and that is something that is a good part" He says and that is something that we need to choose and that will not be taken away from us." Now, is the Lord against us carrying out our roles and responsibilities? No. Do we need to carry out our roles and responsibilities? Yes, because God has designed us and He has created our families and so on. So, there are roles and responsibilities that we carry out. Be it our profession, be it ministry, be it in whatever season of life we are in. Maybe you are a student, the role and responsibility is that we go through our studies, we study well, we do it excellently. But, in fulfilling our role and responsibility, if that role and responsibility is excluding what is needed, that ‘one thing’ that is needed. If the role and responsibility is taking us away from that ‘one thing’ that is needed, if we are worried and troubled about many things and if our worry and trouble is taking us away from that ‘one thing’ that is needed, which is to receive from the Lord Jesus, receive from His word, receive instructions, to hear the voice of the Spirit. Jesus Himself says that the words that He speaks, they are spirit and they are life. And in another place the Lord Jesus says, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." So, this is something that is needed. It is not an add-on, but this is something that is needed. And so, the Lord very lovingly shares that and says that this is ‘one thing’ that is needed. So, in our lives, are we choosing that good part? Are we choosing that ‘one thing’ that is needed without excluding our roles and responsibilities? Yes, we do lead busy lives, but are we excluding that one thing that is needed? Shall we pray? Father, we thank you for reminding this, that life proceeds from you, that you are the source of life, that your words, they are spirit and life and we cannot live by physical, natural means alone, but by every word that proceeds from your mouth. So, Lord, may we choose that good part, may we choose that one thing and we pray that that will make a world of difference, Lord, in the way we live our lives, we thank you, we give you praise and glory, in Jesus' matchless name we pray, Amen.
