Shalom and welcome to another episode of Living Supernaturally. We hope you are having a good day and you’ve been listening in to these devotions and being blessed. Through this week, we started looking at some examples/ stories of people in the bible who obeyed God. Yesterday, we ran through what we saw in Noah’s life and how he obeyed as a result of his intimacy with God. Today, the example we are going to look at is Abraham and we learn that his obedience came from faith. When we read Abraham’s account, there are multiple instances that the bible records about Abraham’s obedience. We know that his life was a testimony of his unwavering faith and obedience, even when he was faced with many challenges. Hebrews chapter 11, verse 8 reads, ‘By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.’ There are many instances we see in Abraham’s life where he obeyed God, one being a reference to this verse where Abraham leaves his homeland, his father’s house and goes to the land that God calls him to, that is where we see his first path of obedience. We see that God establishes a covenant with Abraham and commands that all the males in his household need to be circumcised and Abraham obeys and ensures that every male in his house including himself and his son, Ishmael is circumcised, that is another account we read of his obedience. We then see that Sarah asks him to send away Hagar and Ishamel, although Abraham was very distressed by this, God reassures him and instructs him to listen to Sarah and Abraham does just that, obeys and sends Hagar and Ishamel. And the last one which we are all very familiar with is the sacrifice of Isaac. God tests Abraham by instructing him to offer his son, Isaac as a sacrifice. He sets out to obey but we know that the angel of the Lord intervenes and spares Isaac’s life. This act of obedience really showcases the depth of Abraham’s faith and walk with God. Abraham’s obedience may not have been extremely comfortable and easy for him to leave his father’s house, whatever that was familiar for him, he needed to leave and move. But we see that even though through this directive, he continued to obey what God wanted of him. Abraham’s actions, Hebrews chapter 11, verse 8 says, ‘he obeyed and went.’ It shows his immediate obedience, he didn’t hesitate, negotiate, delay but he acted on God’s command. Abraham also demonstrated faith in God because he obeyed God without questioning Him with regard to Isaac knowing that he was promised son, he didn’t question God. Abraham willingness to sacrifice Isaac in response to God’s command is that ultimate example of faith and obedience. Abraham’s life challenges our faith and the way we obey. Are we willing to obey God even when His direction seems uncertain? Are we willing to wait patiently and trust Him even when His promises appear delayed? Is our faith really strong enough to surrender what we may love and cherish the most? Let Abraham’s example inspire us and let’s cultivate that obedience that is bound in unwavering faith. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for the account of Abraham and through what we learn from his walk of obedience. May we trust and have our faith so sure, so certain that we would do anything that you ask us to do, give up things that we cherish most, or go places where you would want us to. May we have that same faith that Abraham showed. Jesus, we pray that you would build this faith in us to obey you, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
