Shalom, it’s a joy to bring God’s word to you once again. Through this week, we have been looking at how we can handle anger by looking into God’s word. The verse for today in James chapter 1, verse 19 reads, ‘Let every an be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.’ This verse gives a wise counsel and a road map for how to manage our reactions that often can lead to anger. God’s word is always the best way and when we follow it, we are always blessed. What can we learn from today’s verse? There are two instructions that James gives us in this verse. It says, let every man be quick to hear and slow to speak and these are two instructions that will lead to a delayed anger. Being quick to hear or listen, it means that we are patient to hear in completion the other person’s side of the story. When we listen, we are acting in love and in respect. When we listen, we show others that their feelings and words really matter. It allows us to understand their perspective and helps us to respond with empathy. Maybe it is good for us to reflect on how we actually listen to others. Are we truly hearing them or are we preparing what we need to say next? So, this can be a way we can keep from becoming prematurely angry. The next thing that James says is slow to speak. Slow to speak is the opposite of quick to hear. We control what we speak and not saying anything and everything that may come to our minds. Our words have immense power, it can bless, it can bring life, it can encourage, there are so many things that our words can do and conversely, it can also do a lot of negative things. But being slow to speak is taking the time to think before we respond. It is choosing our words carefully and responding in a way that ensures and reflects the love and the patience of God. Let’s consider the impact of our words before we speak especially when we are angry or frustrated. The way we respond in frustrating situations really speaks a lot about how we showcase/ reflect God. James shares this wisdom so that we can honor God even in times of difficulty or when situations are tense. So, let’s learn to keep these instructions of how we can delay our anger. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for these instructions. Give us ears to listen and a mouth that sparingly speaks. Help us to use wisdom and restraint. We pray for your help in every situation that may lead us to conflict or frustration. Teach us how to deal with our anger, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
