Greetings and thank you for joining us today in our time in the word and prayer. This week, we are going to revisit a simple and yet essential discipline or aspect of our Christian life and that is prayer. We are going to review and talk about some basics of prayer. We begin by looking at first Timothy chapter 2, verse 1, where the apostle Paul is encouraging believers, he says, "Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men." So, very interesting, he could have said, "I just want you to pray for everybody." But instead of doing that, he breaks it down further and he's mentioning to us four different kinds of prayer, if we want to use that term. He says, I want you to make supplication, prayers, intercessions, giving of thanks for other people. And so, it's very interesting that he is actually telling us look there are different kinds of prayer that we could engage in. We know that there are different kinds of prayer because we see this in Ephesians chapter 6 and verse 18, where Paul says, I want you to pray with all kinds of prayer, with all manner of prayer or the different ways of to pray and so we want to explore those different ways of praying and make them a part of our life. Now the first one here he mentions is supplications or in some versions it will use the word petitions which really is a request for a specific need or for something very specific. So, that's supplications or petition, that means you're going to God in order to ask for something very specific. So, if somebody says, hey could you pray for me? I'm going through a challenge in life. You take that supplication, you go to God and say God I pray for this particular need, I pray for this particular situation that is praying a supplication and that's part of the kinds of prayer that we engage in which means there's nothing wrong in praying for a very specific need or a very specific situation that we want God to intervene in and we want to take and say God this is what you have promised and we want that promise to be fulfilled in this particular situation. Example, somebody has a need in their life. We say, "God, your word says you are the Lord our shepherd, we will not be in need. Your word says my God will supply all our need according to his riches and glory, that you will make all grace abound towards us so that we will always have all sufficiency in all things." And so, you take the scriptures and you petition God on behalf of His word for some particular need, that is supplication or the prayer of petition. Now one very important thing that when we pray the prayer of petition, we do it with confidence. We'll talk more about this as we journey through the various kinds of prayer and how to pray in the coming days. Let's close, Father, we thank you for these few moments. We ask that you'll teach us to pray, teach us about the different kinds of prayer and how to pray for ourselves and for other people, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
