Old Testament Offerings - Grain Offering (Daily Devotional)

Greetings and thank you for joining us today as we spend a few moments in God’s word and in prayer. This week, we are looking at the Old Testament offerings which God instructed His people to bring and trying to glean some insights as to what they would mean to us as New Testament believers. Another kind of offering that God told His people to bring was referred to as the grain offering. We read about this in Leviticus chapter 2, where they would bring fine flour or oil, a meal prepared with flour and oil. Sometimes it would be unleavened, sometimes mixed with frankincense and this grain offering was an offering of thanksgiving. It was a way to say thank you to God for His provision. So, when the people came to offer thanksgiving to God, they brought a grain offering which was prepared out of the flour, oil, frankincense and then as God instructed them, they would come and it would be offered up to God. It was an expression of the fruit of their labor. Obviously, they harvested the grain, processed it and brought it as a ‘thank you’ to the Lord and expressed their gratitude for the fruit of their labor. So, today as New Testament believers, we offer up thanksgiving to God. There maybe times you give something practically or physically in terms of money and so on which the bible tells us to give. But remember it is an expression, it is not about the item itself but an expression of our thanksgiving to God for Him blessing the labor of our hands and helping us to enjoy the fruit of our labor. Out of that, we offer to God and say, thank you. Whatever you and I may be led to do, we offer it up to God and say, ‘Lord, this is a thank offering, here is something to say thank you for your goodness in my life.’ We may give it into the house of God or bless somebody but it is our thank offering unto God saying we are grateful for you blessing the work of our hands. So, the grain offering in the Old Testament; today, we offer our thanksgiving to God. It could be words of thanksgiving or involve something that you give for the glory of God. Let’s pray, Father, we worship you with thanksgiving. We are grateful to you and say thank you to you for all your goodness and provision in our lives. Even as we offer out of that provision to your kingdom, house and people, as an expression of our gratitude, thank you for your goodness in our lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
