Daily Devotional church in Bangalore
by Ps Ashish Raichur
Greetings and thank you for joining us today for a few moments in the word of God and prayer. It’s always our delight to be able to spend this time with you. This week, we are reflecting on the tabernacle of Moses and looking at the various pieces or parts of that tabernacle and what they speak to us as New Testament believers, as we engage in worshipping God in spirit and in truth. As we had mentioned, the tabernacle had three compartments, the outer court where all the Israelites had access to and the priests prepared themselves to enter in to the next part was the holy place and there was a curtain of entrance that separated the outer court. As the priests went past the curtain, they entered into the next part which was the holy place. There were three pieces of elements of worship in the holy place, one of which we will consider today, which was the golden lampstand- the menorah. It is a 7seven pronged or branched lampstand which had the oil and the lights. That was the only source of light for the priests to work inside the holy place. So, anything else was cut off and this was the only source of light. The lampstand giving light to us, of course is speaking of the Lord Jesus. Jesus Himself said, ‘I am the light of the world.’ To us believers, it is talking to us about the work of the Holy Spirit, the oil representing the Holy Spirit and the light representing the illumination that comes to us form the Holy Spirit. The lampstand and as we see in the book of Revelation, also speaks to us who the church is supposed to be because the lampstand is used to represent the church. We are called to be light to the world. What we want to specifically focus on in our act of worship- the lampstand representing the oil and the light, representing the Holy Spirit who brings us the illumination that is needed, pointing us to the fact that as we worship God, we worship in spirit and in truth. We worship God with the revelation, understanding and illumination that is given to us by the Holy Spirit. So, our worship of God has to come from that place, from the place of what the Holy Spirit is breathing into our hearts and minds, not out of tradition, ritual or a place of doing something routine but something that is fresh, that comes from the oil and the light given to us by the Holy Spirit. Now, it was the responsibility of the priests to make sure the light never went out, the light always kept burning. So, it is telling us that our worship of God must always continually be illuminated by the revelation given to us by the Holy Spirit, that is the only kind of worship we will engage in it, in spirit and in truth, as the Lord Jesus taught us.

Let us pray, Father, even as we engage in worship, we ask that we will receive the oil and the light brought to us by the Spirit of God, that we will worship illuminated by the Holy Spirit, in spirit and in truth, not following a form or a ritual or something that we don’t understand but something that we know is the revelation given to us by the Spirit and so we will worship in spirit and in truth, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
