The Fruit of the Spirit - Joy – Strength Beyond Circumstances (Daily Devotional)

Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you once again for giving us this opportunity to spend a few moments in God's word and in prayer. This week, we are looking and gleaning on important aspects from the fruit of the Spirit. Today, we talk about joy that is strength beyond our circumstances. Nehemiah chapter 8 and verse 10, ‘The joy of the Lord is our strength.’ Christian joy is not dependent on our circumstances around us, but it comes from knowing that God is supreme and God is in control. Even during trials and difficulties, the Holy Spirit fills our hearts with deep and lasting joy. Joy strengthens us during our hardships and keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus rather than our circumstances or the mountains that surround us. Imagine receiving two phone calls on the same day, one brings a wonderful news of promotion or the birth of a child, while the other brings difficult news like a challenge or a financial setback. Can we still have joy when life isn't going our way? Many people think that joy and happiness are the same, but the Bible teaches otherwise. Happiness comes and goes because of our circumstances, but joy is dependent on who we are and who lives within us. This is why Paul, the apostle, calls joy the fruit of the Spirit. It is not something that we can manufacture, it is something that the Holy Spirit releases inside of us as believers as we walk with Christ. Here are a few thoughts. Joy comes from God's presence. The source of joy is not success, comfort, or possessions, it is in the presence of God. David experienced many hardships, he was chased by King Saul, he was betrayed and people didn't trust him. He faced many battles on every side. Yet, he spoke of the joy of the Lord and he knew that God was with him. David spent many years running away from Saul, he lived in caves in the wilderness, lived as a vagabond, yet he continued to write Psalms that the joy of God was his strength. David discovered that God's presence was more valuable than the palace. Joy gives strength during trials. In James chapter 1, verses 2 and 3, it says, "Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds." James does not say that trials will not come or trials are enjoyable. Instead, he teaches us that because of joy, we can face those trials with confidence knowing that God is with us. Joy also enables us to grow in maturity and to look at our circumstances with a different mindset. In Acts chapter 16, Paul and Silas were beaten, they were severely flogged, they were chained, they were put into prison. Instead of complaining, they prayed, they gave thanks to God and they sang joyful hymns. God responded by sending an earthquake that opened those prison doors. Even more importantly, the jailer and his family came to know the wonderful saving power of Jesus Christ. Our joy in difficult seasons can become someone else's reason to trust in Jesus. Joy is rooted in God's promises. In Habakkuk chapter 3, verses 17 and 18 it says, "Though the fig tree does not bud, yet I will rejoice in the Lord." Here the prophet Habakkuk is painting a picture of complete loss, there are no figs, there's no grapes, there's no fruits, there's no olives, there is empty dry land. Yet he declared, "I will rejoice in the Lord." Why? Because his joy was anchored in God's character and not in material blessings. Jesus is our greatest example of joy. Hebrews chapter 12 and verse 2 says, "For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross." Now this verse is remarkable because Jesus endured betrayal, rejection, shame, and humiliation. What sustained Him? The joy of fulfilling the Father’s will and bringing salvation to entire humanity. The cross was not joyful, the suffering was not joyful, but because of what He was going to accomplish through the cross, our redemption and our reconciliation with God, when Jesus thought of that, it brought joy to His heart. Joy enables us to look beyond our current pain or our circumstances and to see the bigger picture that God is in complete control. Joy is not fleeting or it's not fragile. It is divine strength that empowers us to rise above our circumstances. When rooted in Christ, joy becomes a shield against despair and a testimony to the world and to God's saving power. May we walk in the joy of the Lord. Let's pray, Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for this powerful fruit of joy, that no matter what situation or what season that we may be in, your word is eternal, your word is true. We pray, God, that we will hold on to your word, that the joy of the Lord will be our strength. In every season and every circumstance, that we will fix our eyes on you. We thank you for the promise of your word, in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
