Greetings once again and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to minister to you and spend a few moments in prayer.
This week, we are talking from the book of Joshua. Today, we will look at Rahab’s house. Joshua chapter 2, verses 1 and 2, ‘Then Joshua, son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So, they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” ‘Rahab’s house was a kind of place the bible warns young men to stay away from. Proverbs chapter 7, verse 27 puts it this way, ‘Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.’ The Israelite spies entered the house of a wayward woman. We aren’t told why but we do learn later that she became a believer in God. The gods of Canaanite Jericho had been getting credit for the rains on the land that fed Rahab and her fellow citizens. But the Canaanites mistook the source of the field’s fertility because they lived in a land and they didn’t honor and believe in the true, living God. As Rahab the prostitute had wasted her body, so the people of Canaan, failed to honor the true God, but still there was hope. It is good to know that Rahab gave up the false beliefs and empty idols of Canaan and surrendered completely to God. To the kings’ messengers, Rahab said in effect, I don’t know where those guys came from or where they went. Then Rahab went to the spies’ hiding place and confessed what she did know. It is over for Cana, our gods are incapable of dealing with the Lord, your God who rules the heavens and the earth. I know we are as defeated as the kings your God defeated in the desert and on the other side of Jordan. Rahab’s words underscore her actions. Not only does she confess that Canaan’s future lies in God’s hands but also by making this confession, she becomes a traitor to her own people. After the spies’ escape, they return to Israel’s camp and inform Joshua about Rahab’ commitment. Through an outsider, the Lord helped Israel see that God will surely give them the promised land. This example was important to help the people of Israel and the people of the other nations. It was a sign that God wants people from all nations in His family. We learn later that Rahab became one of Jesus’ ancestors. She was an outsider who came into God’s family by grace and faith. May we seek to always glorify that one true God.
Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for the lessons that we learn from your word. Even through an outsider, from a Gentile, you taught the people of Israel that you will give them the land of Canaan. We pray that we will learn to honor and glorify you in every area of our life. We commit ourselves to you, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
