Daily Devotional church in Bangalore
by Ps Ashish Raichur
Greetings and thank you for joining us today to spend these few moments in God's word and prayer. We are talking about the believer's authority and just reminding ourselves of scripture texts that speak to us about the authority that has been delegated and given to us. In Luke chapter 10, the Lord Jesus commissions 70 disciples, 70 followers of His and He gives them, He delegates to them authority to heal, to cast out demons and so on. Now the 70 go out, do what Jesus commissioned them to do and they come back with this report in Luke chapter 10 and verse 17, ‘Then the 70 returned with joy saying, Lord even the demons are subject to us in your name and he said to them I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’ And then verse 19, ‘behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.’ Luke chapter 10, verse 19. What was the authority that Jesus delegated to His followers? First of all, we see from verse 17 that this was authority that was exercised through the use of His name. So, the 70 followers, they came back to Jesus and they said, "Lord, the demons are subject to us in your name." So, it's through the name of Jesus that we exercise delegated authority and we'll talk more about this in the coming days. The second thing we point out in verse 19 is Jesus said, "I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpion." Literally, to have absolute mastery, to walk on something means you're crushing it under your feet and serpents and scorpions obviously are symbolic of demonic powers. Jesus says you're going to crush them under your feet and He says over all the power of the enemy, that means you are having the authority that Jesus given to us extends over everything that the devil can do over all the power of the enemy. And then He says nothing will by any means hurt you, that means you don't have to fear retaliation. The enemy is not going to be successful if he tries to retaliate and come back against you. Nothing shall by any means hurt you. So, this is the authority Jesus gave to His followers and that is extended to us, like we said yesterday to all of us who are followers of Jesus Christ. This is the authority that has been given to us over all the power of the enemy and nothing will by any means hurt us and it's in the powerful name of Jesus. The issue now is you and I must exercise that authority. We must learn how to do it and speak boldly in the name of Jesus. Let's pray, Father, we thank you for teaching, instructing us and we pray that every person listening will be inspired and encouraged to use the authority that is theirs as believers in the name of Jesus, we thank you, Amen.
