Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much once again for this opportunity to come your way, to minister God’s word and spend a few moments in prayer. Today, one of the qualities that we are going to look at is the art of delegation. Exodus chapter 18, verses 25 and 26, ‘And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. So, they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.’ Delegation is the act of empowering others to accomplish a task. Although it seems like one of the simplest things to do, it is one of the hardest things to accomplish. The job of a leader is to see that all the work gets done yet not do it themselves. From the beginning of creation, God began empowering others to accomplish a task. Psalm chapter 8 verses 4 and 6 says, ‘What is man that You are mindful of him… You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet.’ God entrusted His creation to the sinful, mistake prone people and through us, He is going to accomplish His plan. God made the animals but He delegated man the job of naming them. He designed the ark but it was Noah who was entrusted with the job of building it. Delegation is not merely assigning a task; it is about inspiring your team with responsibility while offering the right amount of guidance and support. Moses learnt the value of delegation from his father-in-law Jethro and used it to guide the Israelites through the wilderness. Delegation helped Moses accomplish God’s work and it also empowered the Israelites and fostered a sense of community and fellowship. Jethro observed Moses on the job. After a brief time, he observed two obvious weaknesses in Moses’ leadership. They are brought out in two questions, what is this thing you are doing to the people? Moses was doing things to the people and doing all the work by himself while many were standing and doing nothing. Moses in his zeal, overextended himself. Apparently, large number of people had to sit around in difficult circumstances waiting to see Moses. Jethro concluded that this one-man service was inconveniencing not only him but also the people of Israel. What Moses was doing was a good service but not good leadership. He was solving the problems of the people, teaching them but only giving them head knowledge. They had no opportunity to put that knowledge into practice by solving their problems. He was very devoted to his cause and people. In Numbers chapter 11, verse 15, Moses cried out, ‘If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and do not let me see my wretchedness!’ The load is far too heavy, I rather you kill me than treat me like this. Basically, what Moses was saying was please spare me out of this misery. This sounds like a burnout. Jesus gave His disciples very clear descriptions of the task of preaching the kingdom, curing of diseases, healing the sick and casting out demons and instructions as to what to be expected of them up to the details of what to take and not to take. Our Lord Himself is a delegator even though He is a mighty God, yet He delights in delegating His power to us, His saints. What a privilege that is! Let us pray, Father, we want to thank you for what we learn in scriptures. Though you are almighty and sustain everything in your hands, you have delegated assignments to each one of us. We pray that we will be faithful, serving you with all our hearts, in humility, strength and wisdom to build your kingdom here on earth. We thank you for the opportunity. Even as we serve you, help us to be the salt and light that you want us to be, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
