Greetings and thank you so much for joining us this week. It is really an opportunity and a privilege for us to be able to come to you each day, this week, spend a few moments in the word of God and pray together with you and we trust that each episode this week will bring encouragement and enrichment to your life. This week, we are going to learn about how to test personal prophecy and prophetic words. We know that the Holy Spirit is at work and in these days of the outpouring of God’s Spirit, God said there will be visions, dreams and people will prophecy. So, that is something the Holy Spirit is enabling us to do, so, we are by the Holy Spirit able to give prophetic words or prophecy to one another and minister to one another that way but along with that comes the responsibility, the instruction in scripture to test the prophetic word of the personal prophecy. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, verse 21, the apostle Paul instructs us, he says, ‘Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.’ He says don’t despise it, you test, hold on to what is good. That is our responsibility, we have to test the personal prophecy or the prophetic word. We are going to learn this week some simple guidelines on how to test personal prophecy. If a prophetic word is given to the church, so then of course, the leadership responsible for the church will have to test it. If the prophetic word is given to a larger community, then there will the right people responsible to test it, but we are talking about personal prophecy, when somebody comes and gives you a prophetic word, they speak into your life, they give you a prophecy, then you and I are responsible to test that personal prophecy. How do I do it? The first test is, is the personal prophecy in line with the written scriptures? Is it in line with the word of God? You see, the Holy Spirit is the author of the written scriptures, so, today, if the Holy Spirit is inspiring a prophecy or a ‘now’ or a personal word to me through someone, then what He says to me today will not contradict what He has already spoken in the written scriptures. In 1 John chapter 5 and verse 7, says, ‘there are three that bear witness in heaven- the Father, the word and the Holy Spirit and these three are one.’ That means the Spirit and the word agree. The eternal word and the eternal Spirit are in agreement and therefore the written word which has come from God will also be in agreement with what the Spirit of God is saying to us today. So, the first test is, is that personal prophecy, is it in line with the scriptures? If the personal prophecy is telling you to do something opposite of what God has instructed in the written scriptures, the you have to be careful of that prophecy/ word. If for example, the bible tells us, God doesn’t want us to hurt another person or to kill another person. Now, if there is a prophetic word which tells us to go do something like that, obviously it is wrong, because it is contrary to the word of God. So, you have to carefully test the prophecy to see if it is in line with the instructions given to us in the scriptures, that is the first test. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for the amazing work of the Holy Spirit in and through the church. Thank you for the gifts of the Spirit, we pray that you will enable us to move with these gifts and to handle the expressions, to work with the expressions of the Spirit with wisdom, to discern, to understand, to receive what truly comes from the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
