Silence (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Paul Emmanuel

Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to minister God's word and to spend a few moments in prayer. This week, we'll be talking about the silence of God. In a world full of busyness and sound happening around us, what does the silence of God mean? Revelations chapter 1, verses 10 and 11, ‘I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying, ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, and, what you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches.’ The silence was the most painful part of John's exile in the island of Patmos. John had been used to the noises of busy cities like Ephesus, Sardis and Philadelphia. These were thriving communities filled with endless sights and sounds. More than anything else, John would have missed hearing the prayer of believers and the praises of people rising up to the Lord in worship on Sundays and in other days. Patmos was as silent as death. It was silent that Sunday, the Lord’s Day when John heard the voice as loud as a trumpet blast. It must have made every hair on his neck stand at attention. John learned that the voice came from none other than the Lord Jesus. Jesus broke into Patmos’ silence and commanded John to write a record of what he was about to see. Then later, John would send it to the seven church communities he had worked with. The idea isn't simply that John was walking in the Spirit but he received a unique revelation from the Holy Spirit. This was a unique spiritual experience for John what some might call an out of body experience. It was common for the Romans to dispose criminals in this fashion and clearly John was shut up at Patmos as a criminal for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord's Day, the vision came to the apostle. It was the hour of the sweetest, closest communion when the memories of Christ risen and the fellowship he had enjoyed at Ephesus would work on his spirit and aid in raising him his highest adoration. The loud voice John heard was clear and striking, sounding like a trumpet. The loud voice belongs to the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, who is the beginning and the end of all things. Since Jesus introduced Himself with these titles in Revelations chapter 1, we know that this was the loud voice of Jesus. That day, Jesus also broke heaven's silence. From that day forward, God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit revealed the big salvation story in greater detail. His voice was the sound of many waters like the billows that broke Patmos whereby symbolized to the majesty of his utterance and power. The book of Revelation is not a gift to satisfy our curiosity, it is God's way of helping us come closer to Him in faith, even during tough times. Let's pray, Father, we thank you for what we have learned today that in the silence you will come forth. Maybe many of us are going through those silent seasons of pain and challenges. Lord, I pray that you will come through to them, that you will minister to them, empower them and encourage them. We thank you, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
