Hello everyone, such a joy to be back together with you. We are looking at the claims of Jesus which are also known as the ‘I am’ claims and today we will look at His claim of being the good shepherd. John chapter 10 and verse 11, ‘“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”’ Jesus was pointing to Himself as the person who is in charge, of taking care of people, of mankind. We also notice that He is calling Himself as the good shepherd, if we study the passage, we will understand that He is also trying to say that there have been many others and there will be many others who will come and try to stake claim to protecting God’s people, leading God’s people, and providing their salvation, however, Jesus is the good shepherd. When we consider how a shepherd takes care of the sheep, we know that the sheep are fully dependent on the shepherd, even to the extent of getting the smallest directions, smallest cues from the shepherd to do anything. When a sheep is injured, the shepherd becomes the father, and carries the sheep and takes care of the sheep in such a tender way. Jesus is saying that He is the one appointed by the Father, to take care of the people, He is the one who brings salvation to the people, and we can trust that He has the heart of a good shepherd, to take charge of us in a tender way, to care for us, to also protect us. The sheep are generally protected from any kind of wild animals, particularly wolves and we know that our Lord Jesus has already given us the victory over the enemy through the cross. Today, we stand victorious, we stand in the power of the cross, we stand in the conquest of the cross and we know that we are protected from any and every form of demonic influence. Another wonderful thing about the good shepherd, the passage also says the good shepherd also gives His life for the sheep. The greatest form of love is sacrificial. Without sacrifice, we cannot say the greatest expression of true love but that is what God has done for us, He has sacrificed His own life to provide for our salvation and everything else that comes with it - direction, provision, and blessings. What a great love we have and what a great good shepherd! Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for the Lord Jesus and His sacrifice and thank you for His care, and His leading. When you are our shepherd, we lack nothing, we bless you, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
