Welcome to Living Supernaturally, the daily devotion of All People’s Church, we are so glad that you could be here and we could study God’s word together. We are looking at 2 Timothy chapter 2, verses 15 to 18, where Paul writes to Timothy and says, ‘Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.’ Paul’s instruction is to be diligent, study yourself, put in effort and endeavor. Be diligent for what? To present yourself to God as someone who is approved. The Lord has already cleansed us, sanctified us and justified us but we need to put in that work. He says, put in that diligent endeavor to present yourself to God as one who is approved by Him, accepted by Him, pleasing to Him. How often do I do it? Do it every day, every moment, present one self, we need to present ourselves to God as one who is approved, pleasing to Him and acceptable to Him. As a worker of God who has no reason to be ashamed, no cause to be ashamed but he is saying that you rightly divide the word of truth. Give attention to rightly divide, rightly discern, rightly interpret the word of truth because right believing leads to right living. If we don’t rightly divide the word and if we are skewed and biased and we pick and choose certain things in the word and give emphasis to certain truth in the word and forget the other things and not really take in the whole counsel of God’s word then it leads to unrighteous living. So, he is saying, rightly divide the word of God but shun certain things- unholy and unprofitable, idle babblings which have the trappings of knowledge, which have a veneer of knowledge or understanding but these will only increase to more ungodliness. As we tolerate this and discuss this, these are unholy and profane and idle babblings, vain and empty things, useless discussions. He is saying to just shun it, don’t entertain it because this will lead to more ungodliness in our lives and he is naming a couple of them and he is saying, these people are like that and that message spread like cancer and they have overthrown the faith of some saying the resurrection and second coming is already passed, we need to avoid this. Shall we pray? Father, we thank you for your word and that you are exhorting/ encouraging us to live righteously, to rightly divide your word and to shun other things, profane things which lead to ungodliness. We thank you for this instruction and warning and even as we present ourselves daily before you, we pray that there will be transformation in our lives, in Jesus’s matchless name we pray, Amen.
