Shalom, it’s lovely to be here once again to share God’s word together and meditate on it. Through this week, we have been looking at nuggets of verses in the bible about how we can deal with our anger, what do you do in your anger? Today’s verse is taken from James chapter 1, verse 20, ‘for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.’ James chapter 1, verse 20 is reminding us that human anger doesn’t produce the righteousness that God wants to see in our lives. We see that righteousness is through patience. In other words, anger is not a legitimate way to promote God’s righteous purpose. If we are ill tempered or our anger is selfish, it doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. What does God’s righteousness involve? It involves living in a way that is pleasing to God, that is characterized by love and peace. When we allow our anger to control us, our actions and words often stray away from what God desires of us. Anger can often cloud our judgment and we sometimes don’t understand and know what we are doing and often we make decisions that we could regret later. As we saw, it damages relationships and it creates great barriers between people. So, how can we pursue patience? Patience is a virtue that counters anger. When we practice patience, we are allowing ourselves time to cool down, to reflect and then to respond in a way that honors God. Patience helps us align our actions with God’s righteousness rather than reacting impulsively. To produce the righteousness that God desires, we must strive to respond to anger in a way that aligns with the character of God. This involves patience, self-control and seeking peace. Instead of reacting in anger, we seek to understand and address whatever the root cause is of those emotions maybe. So, this verse reminds us to cautious with our anger; instead of letting it control us, we should seek to respond in a way that aligns with God’s righteousness through patience, understanding and forgiveness. When we do so, we reflet the righteousness that comes from God. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, in each of our situations, may we reflect your righteousness. May we be led to times of patience and kindness and peace. Give us the grace to do that in each one of our situations. We desire to honor you and follow you and the path of righteousness even in tense or difficult situations. Do hear our prayer, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
