Greetings and thank you for the opportunity today to come to you and spend this time with you in the word and in prayer. It’s always a delight to be able to come to you. This is Christmas week, we are all excited about getting together with family and friends in celebrating the amazing thing God did for us 2000 years ago in sending His son, Jesus into this world. Our lives have been changed because of Jesus and we are celebrating Jesus with people we know and people all around the world. This week, we are reflecting specifically on how Mary responded to the word that God sent to her through the angel. We are trying to draw some insights in saying that we too can respond to the word of God. We may not have an angel come and speak to us but we’ve got the holy scriptures. We’ve got the Spirit of God dwelling in us who speaks to us, the voice of the Lord giving us personal instructions and directions. So, how did Mary respond to the word of the Lord? As we look at Luke chapter 1, we said, she believed the word, she rejoiced in God, she recognized the purpose of God and fourthly, we see that Mary remembered the mercies of God. In Luke chapter 1, verses 50 to 53, Mary said, ‘And His mercy is on those who fear Him, From generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.’ Mary recognizes the mercy of God in this word being brought to her. God’s mercy-I don’t deserve this, I don’t deserve being hand picked by God and being given this word to bring forth baby Jesus, the savior of the Lord but I recognize God’s mercies and, in His mercy, I’m just paraphrasing and put it in words of what Mary must have gone through. In his mercy He chose me and, in His mercy, He has given strength. In His mercy, He has rejected the proud. In His mercy, He has put down the mighty and lifted the lonely. In His mercy, He has filled the hungry with good things. In other words, this is a work of God’s mercy is what Mary is saying because He has done this for me. When we receive God’s word, recognize the mercies, compassion, goodness and graciousness of God in God giving us His promise. He didn’t need to do it but He has given us His exceedingly great and precious promises by which we can partake of the inheritance. So, we receive that word and say, God, thank you that in your mercy you gave me this word and promise. Thank you, Lord, that I can be a beneficiary and receive it. Recognize the mercies of God and the goodness of God in His promise and thank Him for us, be grateful for it. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for every promise you’ve given to us in your scriptures which are ours. For all the promises of God are yes and Amen and they are for us. We thank you for your mercies and goodness extended to us in these promises. We receive it and we receive your word. We are grateful to you for your mercies, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
