Old Testament Offerings - Sin and Trespass Offering (Daily Devotional)

Greetings and thank you so much for joining us today, as we continue looking at the Old Testament and the different kinds of offerings that people brought in the Old Testament unto God and what they mean to us in the New Testament as New Testament believers. Today, we talk about both the sin and the trespass offering. In the Old Testament, we read about this in Leviticus chapter 4, 5 and 6 where God instructs His people about the sin offering and the trespass offering, they are somewhat similar because both have to do with sin and wrongdoing. But the sin offering had to do with sin that was unintentional. It was sin of course, but it was unintentional/ unknowing. Sometimes, sins that were done even with knowing that what was being done is wrong or it was also sins that broke laws of purification, made somebody ritually impure and say they brought a sin offering. It could be some animal or poor people brought a goat, lamb, doves, pigeons but they brought a sin offering when they did something and realized it was wrong and they brought it to atone for their wrongdoing. The trespass offering is similar but it was an atonement for wrong that was done against God or people which they knew they were committing, it was not something they were unaware of, they knew it. So, it was a penalty for trespass, I know I am crossing this line, I have crossed the line and here I am bringing an atonement, an animal-a goat or a bird that was brought in as a trespass offering for sin against God or against people. Both of this were brought as a cleansing or a purification for sin. The sin offering and trespass offering was made to God. As New Testament believers, we don’t do this but what we do recognize is that Christ became that one, complete sin offering and trespass offering for us. He became the complete offering who dealt with every sin we have ever committed against God, man and He became the complete offering for sins that we did knowingly and unintentionally; every sin He dealt with and today, His blood has become the atonement/ cleansing for our sin. So, we recognize that. In the Old Testament, they had to keep on doing it but Christ became that one, complete perfect offering for us. The other interesting thing that we read about the trespass offering was there had to be restitution. That means when it was done against somebody, then one goes to make restitution in whatever way one can to repay what was due, sometimes even more than what was due. So, there as restitution involved in that. For us, we are told to forgive and to make amends in whatever wrong we have done to people, to forgive and show grace and mercy. So, let us remember that Christ has become our sin offering but let us also continue to do good based on what He has done for us. Let us pray, Father, we thank you that Jesus Christ is our sin offering, the one perfect, complete offering for us, that His blood has cleansed us from all sin and our faith lies in what He did for us. Help us as we walk, when we trespass against another person, to ask forgiveness, to make restitution the best we can, to restore and follow and pursue peace with all people, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
