Daily Devotional church in Bangalore
by Sis Jean George

Shalom and hope y’all are having a good day so far. Thank you for joining us and coming along with us to learn from God’s word, to reflect and meditate. We’ve taken some time to understand and learn about some examples of obedience. In today’s devotion, we are going to look at the life of Gideon, where he showed obedience in the face of doubt. Unlike the other examples that we looked so far, today and tomorrow, we are going to look at two different people who obeyed but after a few challenges. Very often, in our own lives, we may see that as doubt creeps in, it gets harder for us to obey. Gideon’s story as it is recorded in Judges, helps us see what the transformative power of obedience can be even in the midst of overwhelming doubt. When we are introduced to Gideon in the book of Judges, we actually find him hiding, threshing wheat in secrecy to keep away from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord greets him as a mighty warrior and this is quiet an unlikely title for someone in hiding but it is clear that God has seen him beyond his present situation. We then read the dialogues of doubt between Gideon and God. So, his initial conversation with the angel is all filled with doubt, he says in Judges chapter 6, verse 13, ‘if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us?’ We see that even in this questiononing, there is a deep desire to understand and it almost hints at the willingness to obey. Gideon then requests for signs, he requests for ways to know from the fire consuming the offering to the fleece test, it is emphasizing his need for reassurance. Yet, God is patient with Gideon and his doubt, not with anger but continues with affirmation. Despite his doubt and fear, we see that Gideon tears down the pagan altars in his father’s house and then he later faces an army of Midianites, even though his small army of 32,000 reduce to a mere 300 and he obeys God in that command. This could seem like a very impossible strategy from our perspective but we know that Gideon obeyed and his trust was in God. This victory again was not a testament about Gideon’s might but it was a testament of who God was and the glory of God. It becomes evident here that Gideon didn’t win that war relying on the numbers or strength but on the obedience and trust in God’s plan. In our lives, we will definitely face moments of time which being about uncertainty and doubt. But Gideon’s story invites us to trust God despite what we see. It is our obedience to God and God’s faithfulness that brings about the miracles in our lives. So, what situation in your life requires you to trust and obey God even amidst doubt? Remember, Gideon took that step, let’s take that way forward. Let’s pray, Heavenly Father, we thank you for these accounts that show us that people have been in doubt and yet have moved forward in reliance and obedience to your word. Even as we move through and journey through life, at times of fear and doubt, teach us to take that step of faith and obey you, no matter what our emotions maybe. Thank you for your word and these examples that we can learn from, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
