Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally, thank you so much once again for joining us for this time, where we spend a few moments in God's word and prayer. This week, today, we will be talking about the Mosaic covenant. The establishment of the Mosaic covenant was an epic moment in the history of the nation of Israel. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai and announced that God has established a covenant with the people of Israel, the response was overwhelmingly positive. All that the Lord has spoken, we will do, said the Israelites. This covenant would serve to set the nation of Israel apart from all the other nations as God's chosen people and was equally binding as the unconditional covenant that God made with Abraham because this is also a blood covenant. The Mosaic covenant is a significant covenant in both God's redemptive history and in the history of the nation of Israel, through whom God would sovereignly choose to bless the world with both His written word and His living word. Mosaic covenant differs significantly from the Abrahamic covenant and later biblical covenants because it is conditional, in that the blessings of God's promises are directly related to Israel's obedience to the Mosaic law. If Israel obeyed, then God would bless them; but if they disobeyed, then God would punish them. The blessings and curses that are associated with this conditional covenant are found in detail in Deuteronomy chapter 28. The other covenants found in the Bible are unilateral covenants of promise in which God binds Himself to do what He has promised, regardless of what the recipients of the promises might do. On the other hand, the Mosaic covenant is a bilateral agreement which specifies the obligations of both parties to the covenant. Israel was to be God's light to a dark world around them, they were to be separate and called out as a nation, so that everyone would know that they worshiped Yahweh, the covenant keeping God. It is significant because it is here that Israel received the Mosaic law that was to be pointing towards the coming of Christ. The Mosaic law would reveal to people their sinfulness and their need for a savior and it is the Mosaic law that Christ Himself said, He did not come to abolish but to fulfill. The sacrificial system of the Mosaic law didn't really take sins away but simply foreshadowed the bearing of sins that Christ would do, the perfect high priest, who was also the perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ. Therefore, the Mosaic covenant itself with all its detailed laws could not save people. It was not that there was any problem with the law itself, the law was perfect and it was given by a holy God but the law had no power to give people new life and the people were not able to obey the law perfectly. For Israel, the promises to be a special treasure to God above all people and to be a holy nation will never be realized under the Mosaic covenant. The finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross procured these promises for Israel and for the entire world itself. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior, we gain the promises that will be Israel's in the future. Let's pray, Father, we want to thank you for your word, we thank you for your promises. Lord, when you clearly said in the Mosaic covenant, when we are obedient, you will bless us. I thank you Lord that through the empowering of the Holy Spirit, we can be obedient and you will continue to bless each one of us. We thank you for your Holy Spirit, we pray that you will enable us to walk in obedience and faithfulness to your word and to your promises. We give you all the praise and glory, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
