Hello everyone! Welcome, thank you for joining in this devotion. Today we are going to look at this spirit of holding onto the purpose God has for us and having an attitude that says, ‘I will not quit.’ Our best example in God’s word is of course, the Lord Jesus. So, I want to read for us from Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1 and 2. We see here - Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Now this passage in the book of Hebrews has actually been written to a very discouraged community. It was a Jewish community, and they were being illtreated because of their newfound faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, this was a people who were initially excited about their faith but as time went by, they realized that not everybody was so happy about their faith and so they experienced opposition, losses, they were weary in their faith journey. So, the writer of Hebrews is constantly encouraging them to stay the course and he is also warning them about letting go of this faith. He talks about falling away in one the passages and he really warns them that they will lose the reward that God has for them if they don’t stick in this journey of faith. In this particular passage, he draws their attention to the life of the Lord Jesus. Isn’t that always our best example to look at? The Lord Jesus is fully God and fully man and He faced all the challenges that we human beings face here on the earth, and this is what we read about the Lord Jesus that He endured the cross, despising the shame and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God, is a picture of completing. We usually sit down when we have completed the task which was given to us. So, the Lord Jesus, in the midst of all the oppositions and challenges that He had to face in His lifetime never gave up. He completed the purpose that God had for Him. So, when we go through a season of discouragement or even a season when we are feeling so weary that we don’t want to do anything, that has to do with serving or loving God, it could just pull us down; but in those moments, it is really useful for us to look unto Jesus. Hebrews chapter 12, verse 2 says - looking unto Jesus; as long as we can fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus, we will be steady and stable. It is like the time when the disciples were with Jesus on the boat; as long as they were listening to Him, and He was their focus everything was ok, they observed Him calming the storm as well. Similarly Peter walking on the waters, as long as he fixed his eyes, he was able to continue. So, fix your eyes on Jesus and keep moving forward. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you that you have overcome. As we journey through our lives, we know that you have left behind that example for us. So, Lord we pray for the strength to overcome and for every believer Lord and cause us to walk in victory, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
