Hello everyone, welcome once again. We are examining the claims of Jesus, the ‘I am’ claims which are very direct. Today, we will look at the claim where Jesus calls Himself the light of the world. Let’s read the passage from John chapter 8 and verse 12, ‘Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”’ As Jesus refers to light, He knew that the people of His times could relate it with a certain feast which they followed, the feast of the tabernacles in which they commemorated the pillar of fire of night, which the Israelites had before them when they were walking in the wilderness. This pillar of fire provided warmth, the illumination which they needed to find the direction, it also protected them. The kind of light that Jesus is to us and to the world, He is a light that brings illumination, He is a light that brings protection upon us. We know that in life there are many questions and doubts which we have and a lot of confusions, but Jesus is also someone who claims to be the truth. When you take both of these into consideration, the light and the truth, both of these, they dispel the darkness of ignorance and confusion in our lives. Jesus’ light is also the illumination in our dark times or in our dark situations. All of us face challenges and dark seasons, Jesus was saying that no matter what dark situation exists in the world, He is the light of the world. In this light, you will find God, Jesus came to show us the path to the Father and that is what you will find though the Lord Jesus, the way to the Father. So, Jesus has become that illumination for us, He has become that light that dispels darkness form our lives. I want to read for us from Psalms chapter 18 and verse 28, I’m sure even the people in the old covenant had this experience of God, it says, ‘For You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.’ No matter what darkness we are facing or whatever the affliction, the situation, I just want us to put our trust in the Lord Jesus because He said, He is the light of the world, and this light leads us to be reconciled with God and I just want us to experience this great light that will also dispel our darkness. Shall we pray together? Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus who is the light and the light that directs us to you. I pray that this light will shine bright upon us and that you will be revealed to us, thank you Father, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
