Hello everyone, welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for this opportunity to minister God’s word and pray together. This week, we have been talking about the 10 commandments and we are picking up one commandment each day. Today, we will talk about keep the sabbath day holy. Exodus chapter 20, verses 8 through 11, ‘Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.’ What does it mean to keep the sabbath day holy? What exactly is God telling us to do and what not to do on the sabbath day? In Genesis chapter 2, God stopped working and rested form His labors on the 7th day. He didn’t need rest because He was tired or weary, God is spirit and He cannot get tired or worn out. The reason He rested is that he set an example for us. He wanted to show us that one day of rest and physical and spiritual rejuvenation is important for us. God didn’t leave it up to us to choose the day we want to rest on. He was very specific and He said that best is the 7th day/ the sabbath day. Here are three comments in these verses that we can consider. First one is to remember. To remember the Lord simply means to keep our eyes on Him, don’t forget to take the day off. Secondly, keeping it holy which would mean to set aside all the other things that we may count as special, our work; specially as verse 10 says ‘to the Lord or for the Lord’. In other words, the rest is not just an aimless rest but a rest that is God centered. Attention has to be directed to God in a way that is more consecrated and steadier. Keep the day holy by focusing on God. Thirdly, one out of every seven. The day of rest need not always be the 7th day. Verse 9 says, six days you shall labor and do all your work but, on the seventh day is the sabbath to the Lord. Work-six, rest-one, that should be the pattern that God is exhorting us to follow. It doesn’t say it should be the last day of the week, the concept is that we work six days and rest on one day. John says in 1 John chapter 5 and verse 3, ‘For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.’ For most of us, keeping the sabbath day is really a demand to repent. However, when we learn to enjoy His presence, the sabbath day feels more like a blessing rather than a burden. It is impossible that a day focused on Jesus, becomes a burdensome day. Jesus says, ‘come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.’ Let us come to Him and He will give us rest. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for your word and what you have taught us this morning. Even as you have set the example for us, we work and rest, even as we do this help us to plan, give us the wisdom to know how to go about doing this. We thank you that your Holy Spirit will teach us and empower us to do this, we give you all the praise and glory, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
