Daily Devotional church in Bangalore
by Sis Jean George
Shalom and thank you for joining us once again today in our series of Living Supernaturally, where we were looking at Jesus in His relationships. We saw of the way Jesus' foundational relationship was with His Father and today, we're going to look at Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the dependence that Jesus had on the Spirit. When we look into the Bible, we read in Luke chapter 4 and verse 1, ‘then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.’ The gospels show us that Jesus lived His earthly life not only in obedience to the Father but it was in complete partnership with the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived His life in total dependence on the Holy Spirit, right from His baptism to His resurrection, the Spirit was His constant companion. So, just like the same question we asked yesterday, if Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit, how much more do you and I need to? We see through Jesus' ministry, the Spirit's anointing. At His baptism, the Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove. We see that the Father's voice affirmed Him and said, ‘You are my Son whom I love’ and it was the Spirit's presence that empowered Jesus. This reminds us that the Spirit not only empowers us for service but it also assures us of who we are in Christ. We see Jesus being led by the Spirit. Immediately after His baptism, Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit. Notice that it was the Spirit who led Him into the wilderness. The wilderness was a place of testing, but it prepared Jesus for His mission. We see that the Spirit empowered Jesus. We see that in His return from the wilderness, it was in the power of the Spirit, and even the miracles, healings and preaching, all that followed were from the power of the Holy Spirit. So, we see that the ministry of Jesus was Spirit-driven. This shows us that the Spirit equips us even as His children to follow through with the mission that God has for us. We do read even before ascending; Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them and they would be His witnesses. The same Spirit who filled and empowered Jesus is given to every believer, is given to you and me. This means we are not left to live our Christian lives alone and in our own strength but by the power of the Spirit. So, let's ask ourselves, are we living in daily dependence on the Spirit and relying on Him? Are we willing to follow the Spirit's leading even when it takes us through uncomfortable situations? And do we believe that the Spirit can bless us, encourage us and even help us to witness to others just as the Spirit empowered Jesus? Let's pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for showing us what it means to depend on the Holy Spirit. Thank you for the gift of the Spirit who resides within us. We pray that we will look into the council, the direction and the guidance of the Holy Spirit every day of our lives, just as you did. Holy Spirit, we thank you for living within us and for empowering us. Continue doing this Lord for us, in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
