Shalom! It is a joy to bring God’s word to you this morning and we are going to be looking at the series that we started on with Jesus in His relationships. Today, we are focusing on Jesus and His family and we see the love of Jesus to be patient. When we read in Luke chapter 2, verse 51, we read that Jesus was obedient to His parents. Reading from scripture, ‘Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.’ Before His public ministry, Jesus would have spent nearly thirty years in a family home in Nazareth. Think about that, he Son if God chose to grow up in a carpenter’s house where there are earthly parents guiding Him. Though He was the creator of the universe, Jesus humbled Himself to live in obedience to Jospeh ad Mary. Jesus valued His family life. He didn’t rush past it or probably treat it as unimportant. Instead, we see in different parts, where He honored His parents and grew within that structure of His family. Maybe Jesus’ family didn’t always understand Him. When He stayed behind in the temple when He was 12, His parents were worried ad confused. Later we read that His brothers doubted His mission and at one point in Mark we read that His family even thought He was out of His mind. Through these instances, we see that He honored His parents while growing up and that He didn’t reject His family even when they struggled to believe. He continued to love them. We also see His care that He ensured His mother was provided for even in His dying moment. His example reminds us how each of us should treat our family and that it is part of our spiritual lives, it is not separate from it. Sometimes, family relationships can be quite messy, sometimes those closest to us can misunderstand us or even disagree with us or sometimes even cause us pain and Jesus show us how patience and love must be the anchor that is there in our family life. So, remember that when we extend patience in our family, it is not a sign of weakness but strength that is shaped by the love of God. When we honor parents, we care for children, we are showing grace to our siblings, we are following Christ. Even when temptations or difficult moments arise in our families, the question we can ask ourselves is, how did Jesus respond and we see that He always dealt with them in patience, compassion and humility. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for modeling what it means to deal with family. Thank you for the families you have put us into. We pray that we will love our families, we would honor our parents, love our children, show grace to those who are with us. We pray that the love of Jesus will join us together and will keep us together in true love. We bless each of our family members, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
