Hello everyone. It is awesome to know that God wants us to make an impact. He has called every single one of us to influence. When we talk about legacy, sometimes our mind goes to great accomplishments, maybe the CEO of a company or leaving behind a company or some form of culture and we think that way. However, in the simplest of ways, you and I can leave behind a legacy. We know how Paul wrote to Timothy and he reminded Timothy about his mother and said that the faith which was in his mother is now in Timothy. So, influence can come in many ways. Influence can happen in places that we don’t count usual or worthy but this is how God works. Silently and quietly, you and I can make an impact and influence people around us. Talking about influence, one of the instructions that God gave Abraham, we read about this in Genesis chapter 18, is to teach his children about the things and ways of God. So, Abraham was instructed to command his children in the ways of the Lord. In order for us to influence, we must equip the next generation. Passing on a legacy will involve equipping in some way so that long after we are gone, the next generation has the ability, the skillsets, the vision to carry on. Let’s read a scripture, Deuteronomy chapter 4, verse 9, it says, ‘Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren.’ Here is God’s command to His people where He is wanting His people to hold fast to what He has taught them but at the same time, to make an effort in teaching or training or equipping their children. Especially when we speak about spiritual legacy, character and virtues, we need to be teaching the next generation. If we don’t make an intentional effort then it is very difficult to pass it on. This is not going to happen automatically. Yes, there are some things that are caught but some things need to be taught and God is quite clear in instructing His people to teach the children. When it comes to our walk with the Lord, we know that God has given us the great commission, Mathew chapter 28, verse 20, where we are instructed to teach others to observe all things that they have been taught. I just want to call each one of us to be intentional, to equip and train and teach others. As we do this, they will be built up in the things of God, good, effective and noble things will be built up within them and they will have the courage to keep using them whether we are around or not.
Let’s pray and ask God for the grace to equip others. Heavenly Father, we thank you that where we are today is also because of the sacrifices and the investments by so many people in our lives. Help us to think of others and the next generation and with that grace, to teach them and build them up so that they can carry on your work for a long time to come, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
