Welcome everyone. It's so important for us to remember what God has done in our lives and this should not remain only with us, but the next generation needs to know about the works of God in our lives. Today, we will talk about our responsibility to leave behind a memorial for the next generation.
In Joshua chapter 4 verses 6 and 7, this is what we read, ‘that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘what do the stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark and the Covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off and these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.’ This is God speaking to Joshua in an unusual way. Joshua had the sense of leaving behind a memorial after a mighty work of God. In this case, they had walked through the Jordan. God had parted the Jordan river for the tribes of Israel and what Joshua did is he erected stones. He piled up stones and this was supposed to be a memorial. A memorial is something that will remind us of a particular event and anything significant attached to it. And that's exactly what Joshua's intention was that these stones will be a memorial. Every time the children of Israel looked at the memorial, anyone who looked at the memorial will remember what God did. God wants for us and our generations to always remember what He has done in our lives. May we not forget all that God has done for us. Even in the case of Samuel, we see in 1 Samuel chapter 7 and verse 12, ‘Samuel took a stone and he named it Ebenezer saying, thus far has the Lord helped us.’ And this was also meant to be a memorial of a victory that the people had encountered. So even Samuel did the same thing, leaving behind a memorial. Today, you and I, as we live our lives, we must leave behind memorials of the works of God because indeed the Lord has done so much in our lives and especially in the family unit, it's so important for parents to talk about their walk with the Lord, their journey with the Lord, their salvation, the miracles that God has done, the breakthroughs that they have experienced so on and so forth. Even as they do this, sharing of testimonies, sharing of stories, sometimes it may feel so simple and yet it is making an impact on the children and they are able to trust God just the way their parents did or even stronger and that is the power of a memorial. Always leave behind a memorial. May our life be a memorial of who God is and the power of God.
Let's pray, Father, we thank you that your works in our lives are so mighty. Help us to remember never to forget your works and to also exhort others, to remember those works so that we can build up a next generation of faith, a next generation of trust and dependence on you, we thank you, in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
