Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, early in the morning, our song shall rise to thee, Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy, all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns, around the glassy sea, cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art and ever more shall be.

Welcome to Living Supernaturally. We are doing a series called Songspiration. We are looking at some of these majestic and awesome hymns and old songs that the church has sung to worship the Lord. This song, Holy, Holy, Holy was a poem written for Trinity Sunday which apparently was the eight Sunday after easter and observed by the church of England. Its author, Reginald Heber was an eloquent preacher and writer of poetry, essays, and hymns. Wanting to write more suitable hymns for the people to sing in church, he wrote his own and compiled them into a hymnal in 1820. This was the first to be organized into topics and categories for each Sunday in a church year. Heber’s superior who was a bishop in London, rejected this hymnal saying that the time is not right for such a book of worship. So, the Anglican church continued to sing the same formal hymns. Reginald Heber was then assigned to India as the bishop of Calcutta, and he spent about three strenuous years ministering and serving in India and then he passed away. His premature death at the age of 43 was indeed a great loss to the church. So, the hymnal that had not been accepted prior to his death, was now after his death, published in his memory and was eagerly received by the church. Of the 57 hymns that it contained, the best one, the one that is best remembered, is Holy, Holy, Holy. The hymn that establishes the doctrine of trinity and the ongoing worship that is happening in the throne room and powerfully reiterating the majesty of God and the fact that He is worthy of such an awesome worship, the One who is infinitely Holy. Come let us join this heavenly worship that is happening right now in singing this hymn.

Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man, thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity.

Hallelujah, we bless your name God. We thank you God for who you are, majestic and holy, God in three persons, blessed trinity. Lord, you are infinitely holy, and you have declared, be holy, for I am holy. As we worship you in spirit and in truth, as we proclaim your holiness and the essence of who you are, God in three persons, the mystery, and the majesty of the triune God. Lord, we worship and praise you today. We pray that you would have your way in us and establish us in holiness and truth today and in the days ahead, we thank you, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
