Holy God (Daily Devotional)

Hello friends, great to be back with you. We are talking about God’s holiness and the scriptures remind us time and again that our God is a holy God. Let me read for us from Isaiah chapter 43, verse 15 it says, ‘I am the Lord, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King.’ There are several other scriptures where God’s name is called as holy because apart from all the other qualities that Isaiah could speak about, he had a deep revelation of the holiness of God and so he is calling God a holy God and he goes on to do this several times in his sharing and his communication. Let’s look at the encounter that Isaiah had in Isaiah chapter 6, verses 1 through 8. We saw how he had a glimpse of the throne room and in verse 2, this is what we read, ‘Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.’ Verse 3, ‘And one cried to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!’ In this glimpse that Isaiah had, he saw that the heavenly creatures the seraphim’s who were worshipping God had a mighty revelation of the holiness of God and in the text, a repetition simply means an emphasis on this thought that God is holy. So, the seraphims are crying out thrice, holy, holy, holy which is to reveal that God is very holy. To the greatest extent possible, God is holy and we see a repetition of this manner of describing God in Revelation chapter 4, verse 8, where once again, while talking about this holy God, the word, ‘holy’ is repeated thrice- holy, holy, holy. God is a holy God and Isaiah had a picture of the holiness of God. In the presence of God, when Isaiah saw the holiness of God, he cried out and said, woe is me, I am undone. In other words, he recognized that without God, he was nothing in God’s presence. Self was completely stripped off of him in God’s presence. I want us to also consider the grace of God and the gracious love of God towards Isaiah. Even as Isaiah stood in God’s holiness and knew that he could never match up to God’s standard of purity, God received him. We see that a heavenly creature takes coal and cleanses Isaiah’ lips. This is to show us that God is holy but He wants to accept us in His holy presence and He has made provision for us to be made holy. If we just receive the provision of God which makes us holy, that is the place where our service to God begins. We see that Isaiah’ lips were made clean after which God asks, whom shall I send for the work? Isaiah responds and says he is willing to go. So, after an encounter with the holiness of God, begins the ministry of Isaiah and service to God. Just a thought for us to keep in our hearts that our place of ministry or the beginning of our ministry/ service should be from an encounter of the holiness of God and that is where Isaiah began to serve the Lord, from the place of encountering God’s holiness because our God is holy, holy, holy. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are a holy God and yet you have made provision through Jesus to accept us in your presence. May our ministry like Isaiah’ begin from that place of encountering your holiness, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
