Hearing God (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Paul Emmanuel

Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for the opportunity to minister God's word and to spend a few moments in prayer. Today, we will be talking about hearing God. 1 Kings chapter 19, verse 11, ‘Go out, and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord. For the Lord is about to pass by.’ Why doesn’t God reveal Himself to me? I cannot trust Him unless I experience Him through a clear, miraculous sign. These are common statements or questions we may receive from either believing or non-believing friends. Under a royal death sentence, Elijah fled to a cave in Horeb called the mountain of God. He knew that the Lord was about to reveal Himself there. Soon, a powerful windstorm tore the mountain part and shattered the rocks. What a frightening display of power! But the Lord was not present in the wind. A miraculous earthquake and fire followed the storm. For Israelites, all the signs were God’s presence, but the Lord wasn’t in them. Unlike his ancestors, Elijah didn’t experience God in those powerful symbols. Amazingly, he heard the voice of the Lord Almighty where he least expected it-in a gentle whisper. Silence is not only how we listen to God but it is sometimes, how we even speak to God. Contrary to popular belief, prayer doesn’t need to end with a list of things that we have to say. Silence is an opportunity that we can take in prayer to allow the Holy Spirit to intercede for us and to commune with God. We realize that the impacts made on people have been less on what we have said but more about what we have sat, heard and listened in silence. The best thing that Job’s friends did when they came to comfort him was by saying nothing. Learn to embrace awkward moments of silence as you and I engage in conversations with others. Even on one occasion, after ministering to a whole town in Capernaum, healing the sick, casting out demons into the evening, we read, in the morning, having risen a long time before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place where He prayed. Jesus needed the refreshment of a solitary place. Silence in prayer detaches us from the demands of life and culture. Nothing breaks the power of hurry in our lives like practicing solitude and silence. Our hearts need detachment from this loud, urgent demands of life. It is what our culture thrives on but sometimes, God wants us to slow down and listen to that still, small, quiet voice. We shouldn’t be demanding, instead, we have to be patient, open and attentive and then, we will hear His loving voice. Let’s pray, Father, what an important lesson you have taught us today that even in the busyness of what is happening around us that we can take time to be silent and to know that you are a God who speaks to us through that silence. Give us the ability to spend time in your presence, to hear your voice and to follow you. We thank you for your word that is so powerful and so true in our lives, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
