Have thine own way Lord, have thine own way, thou art the potter, and I am the clay, mold and make me, after thine will, while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Out of discouragement and frustration, often come beautiful songs of surrender and beautiful songs that encourage the human heart. I just want to welcome you today to Living Supernaturally. We are doing a series called Songspiration and we are looking at hymns and songs of yesteryears. This song was written by Adelaide Pollard, born in Iowa, in 1862. She grew up and felt that she had a call, a missionary call and for a missionary service. She prepared herself for a teaching career, but she felt led to go to the African continent and to minister in those nations. For her, getting the funds that were required, was a very big challenge and she tried her best and it seemed quite impossible to get the money that was required to travel there and minster. So, she was frustrated and weary from trying and striving to raise funds. She attended a small prayer meeting one night, to just sit quietly in the presence of God. It was a blessing for her to just sit quietly and just receive the word and listen to what was being shared. In this prayer meeting, there was a very elderly woman who prayed out loud and spoke to God and with all sincerity. Adelaide Pollard was listening to how she was praying, and it was very different from her own prayers. Instead of going to God and asking and pleading with God for the needs, this elderly woman prayed this simple prayer, and she prayed like this to the Lord, ‘it really doesn’t matter what you do with us Lord, just have your way in our lives.’ This prayer really did something to Adelaide Pollard’s heart, and she felt new peace, new hope and new strength and she knew that the Lord would take care. She went home that night, and she opened the bible to Jeremiah chapter 18, that beautiful picture of the Lord asking Jeremiah to go to the potter’s house and watch, that powerful display of the Lord shaping and making something beautiful out of the clay. She read that and inspired by this, she went on to write a poem and before she could sleep, she wrote 4 stanzas of this beautiful hymn ‘Have thine own way Lord, have thine own way, because you are the potter, and I am the clay.’

Have thine own way Lord, have thine own way, search me and try me Master today, whiter than snow Lord wash me just now, as in thy presence humbly I bow.

Shall we pray? Father God, we come before you in all humility. Humbly we bow before you in your presence, for you are the potter and we are the clay. Today, we ask that you break us, mold us, and shape us to who you want us to be. We know that in your hands, we can trust you with the process of shaping, for you always make something beautiful out of our lives. So, we entrust our lives to you and commit ourselves to you wholeheartedly today. We thank you, in Jesus’s matchless name we pray, Amen.
