Welcome to Living Supernaturally, we are looking at God's word and the fact that God's word is
comforting and God is our comforter. He is the ultimate source of comfort to us. We could be in
various seasons of life and we could be going through stuff in our lives which require the
comfort of God. And when we receive this comfort from God, it can be life-changing. While the
circumstances may not change, where the situations may not change very greatly but the
comfort that comes from God strengthens us so that with that same comfort, we are able to
comfort others also. The verse that we're looking at is Psalm chapter 23 and verse 4 and this is
King David who's writing this psalm and he describes God as the good shepherd and the
comfort that he receives in the lowest points in his life. Psalm chapter 23 and verse 4, ‘Yea,
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me;
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.’ So, he's talking about the ministry of the comforter
here. He's talking about the good shepherd whose sheep we are, we belong to the good
shepherd. And he's saying even though I walk through the valley, a valley is a low point in a
person's life. In a figure of speech, valley refers to a low point in a person's life and he's saying
the valley of the shadow of death which means it's a frightening place, it's a place which
threatens to take away our life, maybe it is something to do with sickness, maybe it's something
to do with the life situation itself. He says, even though I walk through the valley, such a low
point in my life, such a low season in my life where everything is taken away and it's the
shadow of death, he says I will not fear, I will not fear no evil because you are with me. The
presence of God comforts us and he goes on to say your rod and your staff they comfort me.
You are with me and what you do, your protection, he's talking about the rod of the shepherd
which the shepherd uses against any attack of the wild animals which come to take away the
sheep. So, he uses the rod and he also uses the comfort of the staff. He uses a staff to lift up the
sheep when they fall into some gorge or ravine or in some kind of a pit, he uses a staff to lift
them up. He uses a staff to bring down certain branches so that the sheep can reach and be fed
and they are strengthened. So, he says your rod and your staff, the way you protect, the way
you nurture, the way you feed me, they comfort me in the lowest points of my life. Let's pray
and receive the work, the ministry of the comforter in our own lives. Lord, we thank you that
you are the comforter. We thank you that you are the good shepherd who comforts us with
your protection, with your presence and with everything that you do in order to nurture us, to
lift us up. Lord, I pray for those who need this comfort today, we thank you for this particular
promise of comfort. Lord, we pray may we experience it in our lives so that we can be
strengthened and changed from the inside out to live for you, we thank you, in Jesus’ matchless
name we pray, Amen.
