Greetings and it’s our joy to come to you today, the day just before Christmas and bring a little word and spend a few moments in prayer with you. This week, we are simply reflecting on the incarnate Son of God, who is He? We are looking at Hebrews chapter 1, verses 1 to 4, and looking at the different statements made in that passage about Jesus, about who God said He is in the incarnate Son of God. I want to being our attention to Hebrews chapter 1, verse 3, it says about Jesus, ‘that He being the brightness of His glory.’ This Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, God embodied, God in human form is the brightness, is the outshining or is the radiance of the glory of God being made visible to us. There is a picture here, the picture of brightness shining out. Immediately of course, we think about the sun, the sun shining it all of its glory, the sun shining brightly. The light that we see and the heat that emanates which we experience, the shining of that sun is an expression of the sun’s glory, the brightness and the heat that comes from there. So, likewise, here the writer of Hebrews is saying, Jesus Christ is God walking in human form and God clothed in humanity. This is the expression, the brightness, the radiance, the visible, tangible expression of the glory of God. Of course, we understand the glory of God is so great it cannot be contained in a human body, it is way beyond what a human body can contain but what we do understand is that whatever can be contained and expressed in and through a human body is being revealed, the glory of God is being revealed to us in the human expression, this human expression of Jesus Christ. Back in the Old Testament, Moses prayed an amazing prayer in the book of Exodus. If you read the early chapters all the way up to chapter 33, he has seen everything, all the miracles, the parting of the Red Sea, water coming out of a rock, manna from heaven, went up on Mount Sinai for 40 days in the very presence of God, he has gone through all of that and then he prays this little prayer, Lord, show me your glory! What a prayer! You and I would never have thought of making that request because we have already seen so much yet, he is saying, God, show me your glory, meaning God, I wasn’t to experience something more. Here, in the New Testament, Hebrews chapter 1 is saying, here is the glory of God revealed, look at Jesus. Show me your glory, your prayer is answered, look at Jesus! He is the glory of God, outshining the very glory of God, this is the glory of God revealed to us. What is the glory of God? It is an expression of who God is and what He does. If we want to know the glory of God, who He is and what He has done, look at the person of Jesus Christ which is the glory of God embodied for us in ways we can understand. This is the visible expression of who God is and what He does. Let’s pray, God, open our eyes to see the glory of God revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ. Help us to understand who you are, what you do, revealed I Jesus, we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
