Greetings and thank you for the opportunity to come to you this last day of 2023 and the first week of 2024. It is a joy and a privilege to be able to speak to you, spend these few moments in God’s word and prayer on this very important time of transition as we close out one year and we get ready for a brand-new year up ahead. On this last day, December 31, the last day of 2023, I want to remind us that our God is the God of breakthrough. In the bible, we find God revealing Himself to us in many different ways and He reveals Himself in terms of what He does for us; He heals us so He is our healer, He is our deliverer as He delivers us and so on. One of the interesting things in the bible that we see is that He is the God of breakthrough. What does that mean? One passage where we see this mentioned for us is in Micah chapter 2, verses 12 and 13, ‘I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob, I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together like sheep of the fold, like a flock in the midst of their pasture; They shall make a loud noise because of so many people. The one who breaks open will come up before them; They will break out, pass through the gate, and go out by it; Their king will pass before them, With the LORD at their head.’ Micah is foretelling a time when God would bring His people back to their land, He will gather them into the sheepfold, He will bring all the sheep there, there will be so many that they will make such a big noise but in order for that to happen, God Himself will break open before them (verse 13), that means He is going to open up the way/ breakthrough for them to make it possible for them to come back to their own land. God will go before them; the King will lead them out. The Good news bible renders verse 13 as ‘God will open the way for them and lead them out of exile.’ That is the God of breakthrough, the God who opens the way. You can imagine this scenario; the people are in exile/ captivity, God is saying I’m going to bring you back, but for us to get back, we need to break out of the situation we are in, we are trapped, surrounded, in exile, far away, all the odds are against us, there is no way that we are ever going to be able to get back to our land. In that context, Micah is saying, your God is a God of breakthrough, He is the God who will open the way, He will break through this impasse, this barrier, whatever is stopping you from getting back to where God wants you to be. He will breakthrough and He Himself will lead you, the God of breakthrough. He is the God who will open the way and will lead you out Himself, He is the God of breakthrough. Is there a breakthrough you need in your life? Something that seems impossible like for the people of God in that time, it seemed impossible, there is no way we can get back but the God of breakthrough opened a door, made a way and He Himself led them back which He fulfilled. The same God is at work in your life and mine. As we close out 2023, you look ahead, the God of breakthrough, the God who opens up the way, He is there for you and me, He will do it. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you that you are the God of breakthrough, you are the God who will breakthrough the barriers, the impossibilities, breakthrough all the things that are stopping our progress/ growth/ increase and things that hinder our life, you will open up the way, you will lead us into what you have appointed for us. So, let your mighty breakthrough presence and your breakthrough work take effect in each of our lives as we get ready for a new year, may we see breakthroughs because you are the God of breakthroughs, in Jesus’s name, Amen.
