Courage (Daily Devotional)

Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to spend a few moments in God’s word and in prayer. This week, we are looking at various qualities of leadership and today, we will look at courage. Joshua chapter 1, verse 9, ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ There is a story in the Old Testament of a newly established leader, his name is Joshua. He was a young and impressive assistant of Moses who later on went on to lead the people of Israel into the promised land. Israel’s wandering through the desert after the great exodus from slavery in Egypt, Joshua was tasked with leading Israel into the promised land, a righteous war time general after the death of Moses. In the book that bears his name, Joshua opens with these divine words of the Lord spoken to him. They are God’s instructions for Joshua as a newly elected leader of a nation with over one million people. The only thing that separated Israel from their destiny was the Jordan river and their willingness to follow a leader full of courage to point away. Just as Joshua had no control over the location of a river or the ability to change people’ heart, neither can leaders of our day change the reality of the crumbling situations that we see around us - wars and political upheavals. Joshua was responsible for two things, one, to be full of courage and two, to obey God. For Joshua, this is all that would be needed to successfully lead the people. The rest of it was up to the mighty work of God who dried up the overfilled banks of the Jordan and graciously unified the hearts and minds of people to press on them. The promise given to Joshua was the promise of God’s presence. God is not disconnected, absent or silent in our lives. He is active, speaking, moving and present. There is a sure foundation of hope and confidence. A leader may sometimes find some untapped, inner strength but the source of true courage in the insignificant and uncertain times of life comes beyond ourselves. Courageous leaders who go with great confidence not because they have a supernatural faith or charismatic hope but because they are filled with the supernatural power of God. Such leaders are directed, influenced and led by the Holy Spirit with eyes set on the kingdom of God in everything that they do. Courageous leaders who live by a greater law which is love your neighbor as yourself are commanded to living and obeying the righteous attributes of God and His kingdom that bring about salvation to the world. Our world needs every day courageous leaders among every people, in every place who lead. Living by the greater law, living by greater courage and wisdom. Let us pray, Father, we thank you for your word and command to be strong and courageous. Even as we see everything that is happening around us, we pray that you will enable us to be strong and courageous, fixing our eyes upon you for you are the author and the completer of our faith, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
