Conscience (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Ashish Raichur

Greetings and it is our joy to be able to come to you today, take these few moments in the word of God and prayer. This week, we are talking about biblical decision making, looking at different pillars that will help us make right, God glorifying decisions that will serve people well. Today, we consider the third pillar which is our own conscience. The apostle Paul said in Acts chapter 23, verse 1, he is standing before the Jewish council and says, ‘Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.’ He is talking about a conscience. What is the conscience? The conscience is the voice of our own spirit. As Paul writes about this in Romans chapter 2, verse 15, ‘it is the law of God written in our hearts and our conscience bears witness.’ So, God has put His law inside every person from the time we are created and that law bears witness, that means that law is what He has written in our spirit is speaking. So, you can say, the conscience is the voice of our spirit expressing the law of God that is written there. For example, how does somebody know something is right or wrong? Well, there is a conscience, the law of God written in our hearts telling us this is right or wrong. It is wrong to lie, it is right to speak the truth. It is wrong to hurt somebody, it is right to bless somebody, that is already innate in us, God designed us that way. So, the key is to listen to your conscience. Does your conscience permit you to do something? Or does it violate your conscience? So, when you are about to make a decision, if it is something unlawful, illegal, immoral, unethical, your conscience is going to tell you it is wrong. You don’t even need to consult so many people. Your conscience is saying that is wrong. For instance, in Romans chapter 13, verse 5, just talking about being obedient to civil laws, Paul says, you must be subject not only because of the wrath or the punishment that may come but also the conscience’ sake, that means obey the civil laws for your own conscience’ sake because you will violate your conscience just by violating the law. So, listen to your conscience, does my conscience allow me to do this, is my conscience clear, will I have a clear conscience by making this decision? When you have several options, which of these options will allow me to have a clear conscience or which of these are actually violating the conscience that God has put in me. It is so important as believers, sometimes we don’t realize this, Paul writes in 1 Timothy chapter 1, verse 19, ‘having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck.’ If you reject a good conscience, it will shipwreck/ destroy your faith. People don’t realize how important a good conscience is to having a strong faith. So, maintain a clear conscience in the decisions you make. Listen to what your conscience says, does my conscience allow me to do this? If I’m going to make a decision which will hurt people, unethical, going to affect people is wrong way, my conscience will not let me, the law of God written in our hearts will not permit us to do, and we will be actually violating our conscience. So, pillar number three, listen to your conscience. Keep a clear conscience, have a good conscience and that is a very important pillar in making good decisions. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for the conscience, the law of God written in our hearts bearing witness, that we will learn to listen to our own conscience, maintain a good, clear conscience as we make decisions, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
