by Ps Paul Emmanuel
Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for this opportunity to minister God’s word and to spend a few moments in prayer. Today, we will talk about treasures. Colossians chapter 2, verses 1 through 5, ‘I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.’ Smartphones put remarkable treasures at our fingertips. We can use these devices to make calls, text messages, take photos, set up appointments on calendars, search the internet, download vast amounts of music and data. With the addition of countless apps, the treasures in a smartphone are multiplied a thousand-fold. Looking at a seemingly ordinary child - Jesus in a manger, we would have never guessed that all treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Him. Paul’s answer to the heretical Colossian philosophy is an explanation of the significance of the believer’s union in Christ. Jesus reminds us that where your treasure is, there your heart will also be. Paul reminds us the inexhaustible nature of the treasure in Christ. As a result, we rely on the bible to reveal these treasures so that you and I can make use of them. What is wisdom? Wisdom is personified in Proverbs chapter 8 as being the right and the best way to live. Wisdom was the first of God’s work. He brought forth the world and the Lord created all of these things in the universe and wisdom finds its perfect expression in Jesus Christ. In Him, we find insight for daily life to distinguish between right and wrong, what is important and unimportant and what is temporal and eternal. Biblical wisdom is definable as a skill for living. In fact, human wisdom could never comprehend God’s plan for salvation. Paul wants the Colossians to be totally controlled by God’s knowledge. The knowledge Paul wants the Colossians to have is a deep, thorough knowledge of God’s will and His ways. Knowledge has to do with understanding a subject. Jesus knows His Father, the creator intimately. Paul prays that all the saints might become possessors of this knowledge, indicating that it was open for all to appropriate, not a secret into which only some were favored or initiated to. If the gnostics had their superior knowledge, so did the church. The former was speculative and false; the latter was positive and true. Paul prays that they not only might have it but they might be filled with it. When scientists begin to scratch the surface of all the wonders of the universe, we stand amazed at the knowledge and wisdom of God. What a lifelong task God has given us to discover and to use the hidden treasures that are in Jesus Christ.
Let us pray, Father, we thank you for the treasures of your word and the treasures that are available for us. We pray that even as we read and meditate on your word, you will fill us with your wisdom and knowledge and these treasures, we will keep it in our hearts and apply it in our lives, to be successful and fruitful for the extension of your kingdom here on earth. We thank and praise you, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
