Print and Digital – using content effectively to reach different audiences
At different seasons of their lives, people prefer or are able to receive truths in specific ways. In some seasons of life, only short reads might be possible owing to overwhelming schedules. In some seasons of longer waiting periods or seasons of rest, people are eager to take time to delve deep into the Word and do in-depth personal study on Bible topics to build themselves up for the next season or prepare for a breakthrough. By thoughtfully planning, one particular source of content, let’s say a book, can be adapted wisely into other formats for effectively nourishing the minds of readers in their different seasons of need for the Word of God. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
Also, when sharing the Gospel to different people of various backgrounds, it is good to plan the type of content and format for maximum reach of the message to specific groups of people. One format may not suit all audiences. Hence, understanding the audience before taking the Gospel to them will help plan how the literature must be shared as well.
1. Tracts / Pamphlets
Assuming that the original source of content is in a book form, it can be adapted to be published as tracts. Tracts or pamphlets are essentially shorter formats that are used prevalently by outreach ministries, campus ministries, etc. Though content is getting reused, ensure there is thoughtful editing of it to fit the shorter format without diluting or missing out on the key messages. Tracts are generally for attracting audiences who may not be keen to pick up longer forms of literature or have an inclination to receive the message readily. Hence, tracts are designed in bright colour scales with pictures and textboxes to make the content attractive and engaging.
2. Blog Posts
Blog posts have garnered faithful followers for over a decade owing to insightful and engaging articles published online by reputed Christian authors. By consistently generating engaging articles, blog posts have been quietly helping believers in their faith journey and attracting new readers to the faith with quick 10-minute reads or less. Adapting content from books into blog posts, either theme-wise or at random, can be highly beneficial for readers who often wish to read and grow in their faith but are unable to do so due to their packed daily routines. Blog posts can be a helpful tool for such an audience where good Christian content can be published as quick reads and with comment boxes to leave behind their queries. They can revisit the blog posts to see the answers to their queries or continue reading follow-up articles under a thematic study. New articles can be published either weekly or daily based on availability of content that can be consistently published over an extended period of time so readers can regularly visit the site and develop the habit of reading, and learn and grow in their faith.
3. Audiobooks
In the recent trend of reading, audiobooks have gained much popularity. Readers can absorb content on the go while doing their daily tasks. Converting digital copies of books into audiobooks can be a useful means to reach audiences who are eager to learn but have less time to read. Another particular category of audience may be able to understand a language but not necessarily have the reading skills. For such an audience, audiobooks can be a useful resource to learn and grow in their faith journey without their limitations preventing them from accessing good Christian content. There are also unique groups of people such as those in hospice care or lacking mobility due to certain physical limitations, etc. who would be greatly blessed to receive God’s Word through audiobooks.
4. Visual Adaptation of Print Content
Creative adaptation of content into visual formats has become possible with the support of AI tools. Content can be creatively used for generating engaging learning videos in forms of book summary animated videos, PowerPoint presentations for training, infographics, etc. The younger audiences have a larger percentage of visual readers and hence, good Christian content can be made viable and attractive to them using these engaging visual adaptations. In all of the adaptations, the integrity of the content must be retained at all costs so the theology and message are not lost in the process of adaptation. Crosscheck with the original source to ensure the message conveyed in the new format is faithful to the original source. Ensure Scriptures are included in all forms to the degree it makes sense in the format in order to not lose focus on the message while engaging in a new format.
5. Social Media
Social media has emerged as a new marketplace where individuals from all streams and backgrounds come together, engage with content, learn from each other and are influenced in so many ways. It is wise to make maximum use of social media for Christian evangelism in order to engage with different audiences and draw their attention to the truths in the Word of God. Therefore he [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. (Acts 17:17) From a book or blog post, a punchline can be taken and posted on social media with the link given that leads to the main content for further reading or download or purchase. Or a portion of the content can be shared as a series of social media posts to enlighten important truths on a Bible topic. With careful thought and a good understanding of the audience targeted, a simple post, a short video can intrigue someone to know more about the Gospel ultimately leading them to their salvation. The power of social media to spread the Gospel cannot be undermined in today’s world.
6. Sermons
Several Christian authors have adapted their book content into sermons and teaching videos. This has been one more impactful way to deliver messages and teachings to believers. It leaves a great impact on the audience to hear the author of a book deliver the same message as a sermon or teaching videos as there are audio learners who can grasp information better when they hear it.
I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. (1 Corinthians 9:22,23) Taking inspiration from the ministry work of the great apostle Paul, let us also be keen to serve the precious truths from God’s Word in all ways to all groups of people in whichever corner of the world they may be so they may know Jesus. We must not be prejudiced against any means to convey the Gospel as long as it is God-honoring and faithful to the Word of God.
