Is Print Media Still Relevant in the Digital Age for Spreading the Gospel?

There has been an influx of content ever since digital media found its way into our lives. There is no dearth of information on any topic on the internet. However, from a long time ago, books have been identified as a resource symbolic of learning and maturing. With excess content available anytime anywhere online, is it necessary to continue the ministry of print media to spread the Gospel? We are looking at some valid and practical reasons why print media still continues to build people, especially in the Christian world.

1. Tangible and Personal Engagement

One of the most personalized gifts is a book. When you come across a very good book that has impacted your life, it is a meaningful act of kindness and care when you gift the same book to someone. It shows you care for them on a deeper level and wish to share the wisdom you discovered in a particular writing for their betterment as well. Christian books have always been impactful gifts that have transformed lives. When a person receives a book as a gift, it motivates them to read and absorb the knowledge in it more intentionally. There is also the impact of authors in the lives of readers. Many Christians have been blessed by the insightful writings of Christian leaders who lived their faith journey zealously and went on to record their learnings to help fellow Christians in their faith journeys as well. Their life experiences penned down in a tactile form has a very personal impact on the lives of the readers. Readers tend to highlight key sentences, write down margin notes, note the date of a particular message from the book that has impacted them, etc. This simple note making is more viable when handling print books. Readers are also able to revisit their learnings years later as books are preservable commodities. The journey of their faith over the years is tangible through what they have noted down in their personal copies. These print copies can also be passed down to future generations. Thus, this tactile experience helps the Gospel message feel more personal and reflective, encouraging thoughtful reading rather than quick scrolling. 2. Print Media Reaches People Without Reliable Internet Access

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) There are many pockets of society where the reach of the internet is little to nothing. These areas are very hard to penetrate with the Gospel but for the help of books and tracts. With printed forms of literature on the Gospel, many outreach ministries have successfully made an impact on the lives of people living in these remote regions. People with no familiarity with digital media, even with internet access, may feel overwhelmed by the platform itself. However, print media has a sense of familiarity and simplicity. Hence, there is an ease amidst people in these regions to accept a book or a tract when offered to them. There are also sensitive places such as care homes, prisons, refugee camps, etc. where people could be living there for long periods of time and will not get access to digital media as easily as a common person. In such cases, physical copies of literature are indispensable resources that can bring hope, God’s love, and salvation into their lives.

3. Useful across Generations

With proper care, physical copies of books can be preserved and passed down to at least one or two generations. They are also resources that can bless different people at different periods of time. Libraries are great examples where personal copies of books are eventually passed on to libraries for other people to read and benefit from.

4. Deep and Focused Reading

Apart from some exclusive online reading platforms that support focused reading, a majority of the online content is presented on platforms where only a short span of attention is possible. With advertisements distracting readers, and access to undisturbed reading only possible with subscriptions, the very act of reading itself requires an effort with leaving low chances of the message or teaching having the deep impact on the reader as the writer would have desired. In contrast, a physical copy of a book allows readers to get away from the noise around, retreat into a space of focused reading, and meditate on the message and teachings. The form of the media itself allows for the reader to overcome the barriers of distractions and move into a concentrated state of mind that can efficiently learn and absorb knowledge.

5. Personal Evangelism

One of the responsibilities of Christians is to share the message of hope with the people in our lives who are yet to experience the salvation Jesus has won for us on the Cross. Personal evangelism is, therefore, an important ministry in a believer’s life. In this ministry, one helpful resource is print forms of Christian literature. Many people initiate a simple conversation with someone and then leave a tract or a book in the hands of that person who can then start their journey in the faith with the help of the literature in their hands and the impact of the conversation as well.

Print media can function without requiring any kind of digital support if need be. With the boom of technology, print media may have experienced some hardships. However, print media still holds its rightful place in the field of Christian literature. With so many regions across the world yet to hear the Gospel for the first time, Christian literature in the native language of these regions can become the starting point to witnessing the Gospel permeate these parts of the world. Translated literature, hence, is also an essential part of print media. In light of these surplus benefits from using print media, books and tracts in print form will still hold their place in the world at large and especially in the spread of the Gospel. Literature based on Bible teachings, personal experiences of godly leaders in their faith journey are essential learning materials to nurture the faith of people as well as reach the unreached in different parts of the world.
