Greetings and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity to minister to each one of you and spend a few moments in prayer as well. Today, we will talk about understanding the scripture. 2 Timothy chapter 2, verse 15, ‘Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’ Everyone to varying degrees, we struggle sometimes to understand the bible. Even after nearly 2000 years of church history, there are some bible verses and passages, that we may not understand and even some of the most brilliant theologians and bible scholars begin to speculate the exactness, correctness or the meaning of the word. Why is it so hard to understand the bible? Why does it take so much effort to fully and correctly understand the word of God? Before the question is explored, it must be made clear that God didn’t make the word unclear. The message of God’s word is perfectly clear. There are several factors that sometimes make the bible hard to understand. First, there is the time and culture difference. The culture in which the bible was written was very different from most of the cultures that exist today. Second, there is the fact that the bible contains different types of literature. The bible contains history, law, poetry, songs, wisdom, literature, prophecy, personal letters, apocalyptic letters and all these literatures must be interpretated differently. Paul says to Timothy, I know some of what I am writing won’t make sense to you immediately and you will be tempted to think that you cannot understand it, but you can. So, don’t give up easily, don’t assume that this is above you. Assume that God can make His words clear to you. If we are in Christ, we can see things that they can’t. We can understand things that the others can’t. Where they see foolishness ad irrelevance, we see the unspeakable beauty, radiant window into reality. Not because we are smarter or more educated or a better reader because we are not a natural person anymore. We are supernatural, with a supernatural mind and heart. None of this means we just sit alone with our bibles until we understand everything. No! God gives us the understanding in a hundred different ways and God has multiplied pathways to understanding in our day. First and foremost, through local churches, then we have messuages, books, articles, commentaries, podcasts and many other resources that are available for us. The point here however is that we can really understand what the bible has to say. Trying to understand the bible can sometimes be a difficult task but with God’s help, it is possible. So, when you open your bible, be strong and courageous, God will be with you even as we read it. Don’t be discouraged or intimidated, think harder and longer because you know the Lord loves you and He will bring His understanding into our hearts. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for teaching us today that your word is true, infallible. Even as we continue this journey of spending time in your word, teach us, give us greater revelations to understand your word and to apply it in our lives, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
