The Tongue (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Ashish Raichur

Greetings and thank you for joining us throughout this week, we’ve been reminding ourselves about declaring the word. In closing off this week, I want to remind us of what James wrote in James chapter 3 about the tongue. In verses 3 to 6, he said, ‘Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.’ James reminds us about the power of the tongue. He says, just as you control a ship with a small rudder, a horse with a bit in its mouth or a little fire can destroy a great forest, that is how powerful our tongue is, that means our words can speak. He is talking about an evil tongue that is influenced by hell. This kind of tongue defiles a whole body and destroys our whole future. But you flip that around and say, if my tongue is set on fire by the word of God, that kind of a tongue will bless my whole body and it will bless the whole course of my life and it will direct my life into the very things of God, into the things that God’s word has spoken. So, intentionally use your tongue to speak the word, the things God has said about you, so you bless your whole body, your life, your present, your future, you set on fire the course of your whole life wit the word of God. You direct and you steer your life into the very promises of God by consistently speaking the word. Do what God said. It may seem very simple and foolish sometime but this is the God’s word and we live by it. Declare the word! Let your tongue speak His word. Let the word of our mouth, meditations of our heart always be acceptable to the Lord our God, our redeemer. Let’s pray, Father, we ask that you will help us keep your word in our mouth and always declare your promises and speak what you have spoken concerning us, to say what you’ve said about us. We thank you that your word will be fulfilled in our lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
