Hello everyone and welcome to Living Supernaturally. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to come together and meditate on God’s word, spend a few moments in prayer. This week, we are talking about a few bible characters and today, we will talk about the great prophet Samuel. Let’s read this portion from 1 Samuel chapter 3, verses 10-12, ‘The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. At that time, I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end.’ Today’s verses begin with the note that the word of the Lord was rare and there were not many visions in those days. Eli, the priest was growing old and his sons had dishonored the Lord through their disobedience and abuse of their role as priests who were supposed to serve God. In the midst of the silence and this trouble, Samuel began to serve in the house of the Lord where the ark of God was placed. When God woke him up in the middle of the night, Samuel did not know who was speaking, he thought it might be Eli. Eventually Eli realized that the Lord might be speaking to Samuel. Then Samuel received instruction that would direct his future and his role for God’s kingdom. God called on Samuel to listen to and to bring the word of the Lord to the people. Samuel became a prophet and he led Israel in this role for 60 years as Israel moved from a loosely organized group of clans to a peaceful monarchy ruled by David, who goes on to become one of the greatest kings of Israel. God sends Samuel on a mission to anoint a new king. All Samuel knows that God will choose one of Jesse’ sons. Jesse brings his 7 elder sons but God chooses none of them. So, they all wait till the young shepherd arrives. In this awkward unlikely scene, we witness an unexpected and awesome pause. God does not make decisions the way people do and God, not anyone else will make that choice. The posture that opened up that future for Samuel was one of listening. Despite the fact that God gave us two ears and only one mouth, we live in a world that unleashes a torrent of words. We need space and peace and silence in order to hear and focus on God’s word, given in the bible. God invites us, in Psalm chapter 46 and verse 10, He says, ‘be still and know that I am God.’ I believe that as believers this is what we need in a world that is full of confusion and everything being so fast and quick. God exhorts us and He says, be still and know that I am God. We are to be still in the presence of God to hear His voice in our hearts. Few thoughts as we close, listen, be available and be quick to respond. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for your goodness, we thank you for your grace, we thank you that you do not look at our outward appearance but you look at our hearts. We pray that we will walk with clean hands and a pure heart, to honor you, to glorify your name, we thank you Lord, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
