Made Holy (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Nancy Ramya

Hello friends, what a joy to be back together with you. We’re talking about the holiness of God. Today, I want to take a couple of minutes to reflect on how we can be made holy. Whenever we talk about the holiness of God, it seems like a daunting thought and it seems like the God kind of holiness is unattainable. Scriptures tell us that our God is so holy, that He lives in unapproachable light whom no man has seen or can see because He is that holy. We’re also told that all of our righteousness is like filthy rags before Him. No amount of our righteousness can match up to the purity and the holiness of our God. So, we can never reach that position of matching up to God’s holiness, but then what do we do? How do we enter the presence of such a holy and mighty God without some sort of a provision? When we look at the Old Testament, we have this concept of atonement and we see that the God instituted priestly practices through which those things that were unclean could be made clean. There are passages such as Leviticus chapter 14, verses 19 and 20, ‘Then the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make atonement for him who is to be cleansed from his uncleanness. Afterward he shall kill the burnt offering. And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. So, the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.’ There are two words that we can observe here, one is the word ‘clean’ which is from the Hebrew word ‘taher’ and another word ‘atonement’ which is from the Hebrew word ‘kafa’. As we understand these two words, what we recognize is that God made provision for cleansing and God made provision for atonement. Cleansing/ taher means to be may bright and atonement here means to cover, the covering of sin. God allowed the priests to bring cleansing where there was uncleanness and this gives us great hope because God had given us these shadows in the Old Testament to help us understand the work that Jesus would do for us once He came to redeem us. We know in the book of Romans chapter 5, verses 10 and 11, we are told that Jesus has reconciled us to God. The term ‘reconciliation’ again refers to atonement and so, even though God is so holy and His holiness seems unattainable, through our Lord Jesus Christ, God has made a way for our cleansing, He has made a way for our atonement when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we put our trust in Him, we receive His salvation, we can enter the presence of the holy God; not because we by ourselves are holy but because God has made provision through our Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you that you being a holy God have made a way for us to come into your presence. Thank you that it is you who makes us holy. Thank you for Jesus and His sacrifice and the blood that cleanses us, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
