Gift From God (Daily Devotional)

Shalom and thank you for joining us for another week of Living Supernaturally, where we are looking at different topics and our topic for this entire week is on work. Through this series, we are going to look at what the bible says about work. Whether you are a student or an employee or a homemaker, we all do some kind of work and we look at it from a Christian perspective because we spend a lot of time doing work. As Christians, it is important and vital for us to align our work with God’s perspective. Sometimes, we see that people have a very different attitude towards work. So, some have the tendency to overwork themselves, while others avoid it at all costs. However, we know that both these responses and attitudes can lead to negative consequences. The work we do is a gift from God. We see in scripture, Ecclesiastes chapter 5, verse 19, ‘to enjoy your work and accept your lot in life- that is indeed a gift from God.’ We see that work is a gift from God. It is not a punishment, work has dignity, work is something that God does. God created us to work and work is what makes us part of being human as well. We see that the origin of work was depicted in the book of Genesis. Legitimate work reflects the activity of God. We see that in the beginning of the Genesis account, in fact God was the first to do work. We read that God was busy creating the world 6 days and He rested on the 7th day. These passages reveal that God was the first to do work on the earth and therefore we see that legitimate work reflects the activity of God. We see in that account that God takes pleasure in the outcome of His work. We read in Genesis chapter 1, verse 31, it says, He calls the fruit of His labor, good.’ He said what He created was good, He examines and assessed that quality of work and called it good. So, since the beginning of creation, work has been part of God’s plan for humanity. He created, that means you and I, can view the act of working as a gift. By this example, it is apparent that work should be productive, that we need to work in such a way that it produces the best or the highest quality outcome and the reward of our work is the honor and satisfaction that comes from a job that is well done. Let’s take a better look at work and not have a substandard look at it and not see it as a substandard activity but see it as God’s gift for us. Let’s see it as a means of glorifying God and providing for the needs around us. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, give us a new, fresh perspective about our work, whether we are studying, whether we are homemakers, whether we are in a job, teach us to view what you have given us as a gift and may we do what you have given unto us faithfully. May we have good approaches to our work and honor you in the process, thank you Lord, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
