Command To Holiness (Daily Devotional)

Hello everyone, welcome. We’re talking about God’s holiness. Today, let’s focus in on the fact that we have been commanded to be holy by God. God is holy and God wants us to reflect or reveal that holiness in and through our lives. So, we have instructions in the Old and New Testament to live a holy life. Let’s read a couple of scriptures, the first one from Leviticus chapter 19, verse 2, which says, ‘Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.’ 1 Peter chapter 1, verses 13 through 16, ‘Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”’ Apostle Peter here is reiterating or reminding the believers about God’s command for them to be holy and it is interesting to note that he is talking about this along with the mind and conduct. God wants us to be holy and pure in our thoughts, He wants us to take action in our conduct and this is how we can demonstrate holiness. Apostle Peter also talks about letting go of earthly things, the old ways of living that people are used to when they are not in Christ. But once we are in Christ Jesus, there is a new way of living, living by holiness. So, he charges the people and says, be holy, as our God is holy. We are called to be holy. How do we walk in this kind of holiness? We’ve been saying that true revelation of God’s holiness which can be brought to us by the work of the Holy Spirit is what will produce holiness in us, so that is the starting point. The revelation of God’s holiness will produce holiness in us. The holiness of God is absolute sinlessness, the holiness of God is absolute purity and integrity. As we’ve been saying/ as we consider the holiness of God and how sacred/ precious/ valuable He is, sometimes, we may have the sense that we can never attain it. I just want to remind us in the book of Hebrews, we are told that we can have the boldness to enter into the holiest, the presence of our God by the blood of Jesus, Hebrew chapter 10, verse 19. So, not by ourselves or on our won, but by the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus, you and I can walk in the holiness of God, we can draw near to the presence of God. There are many other scriptures, 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 21, which reminds us that we have now become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. It is the work of Jesus that we need to receive, believe in and live out by accepting. So, as we do these things, we will see that we are able to align ourselves to the holiness of God. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, you are so holy and thank you for Jesus, through whom, we too, can be partakers of the holiness of God. Help us to be holy just the way you are holy, in Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
