Believe Him (Daily Devotional)

by Ps Ashish Raichur

Greetings! This is the week just before Christmas and all of us are in that mind of looking forward both to getting together with family and other believers to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jeus Christ. This week, we are going to take some time just to reflect on some part of the Christmas story, about all that happened two thousand years ago when God sent His Son, Jesus into the world. What I want us to reflect is on how Mary received and responded to the word that was brought to her by the angel Gabriel. If we try to imagine this in our minds, here was a young virgin, she is engaged and looking forward to the upcoming wedding with her fiancé, Joseph, it must have been a very exciting time. Suddenly, God interjects all of this with a message and a word that probably really turns her world upside down, it is beyond her comprehension, beyond anything that she ever imagines, it is completely unexpected. The angel of the Lord comes to Mary and brings the word to her that she is going to give birth to a baby boy and this is going to be the Son of the Highest. In Luke chapter 1, verse 34, Mary responds, ‘Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”’ That is a normal question, how can this be? How can I give birth? I’m not even married and don’t know a man yet. Of course, the angel explains to her that it is the power of God that will come upon her and that which is born in her will be called the Son of God because it will be born by the power of the Holy Spirit. In verse 37 to 38, the angel continues forward, ‘For with God nothing will be impossible. Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.’ How did Mary respond to this message? We are going to consider this over the next few days. The first thing we see is that she believed the word. This word was really way out of her realm of understanding and ability to comprehend, something way beyond her imagination and yet she said, be it unto me according to your word. She went later on to meet her cousin Elizabeth, Elizabeth by the Spirit said this in Luke chapter 1, verse 45, ‘Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.’ This is an encouragement for us. There are times when the promises of God seem way beyond our imagination and what we can comprehend. How will we respond to the word that God interjects into our lives? Would we like Mary simply believe the word and say, Lord, be it unto me according to your word. God’s response is always, blessed are you who believe, for there will be a performance of those things which was spoken to you by the Lord. Believe Him and believe His word. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for this time where we could celebrate what you did in sending Jesus into this world. As we reflect on how Mary responded to that message that was brought to her, may we be inspired to do something similar, to believe the word and to see the word fulfilled in our life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
