Be Angry, But… (Daily Devotional)

Shalom, it is a privilege to join you once again as we look into God’s word and meditate on some scripture for today. Through this series, we are going to be looking at how to deal with a very common emotion that we may all feel- our anger. What do we do in our anger? We look at the teaching that the bible has about how to handle our anger. Anger like any other emotion or feeling is something that is natural. Anger in itself is not sin but this emotion when it is unrestrained can lead very quickly to sin. Learning how to handle anger is a very important life skill. Many of us listening here today may actually struggle with how to manage and handle this emotion of anger and we may have experienced it in different degrees. We know that anger can break communication and it can break relationships. The sad part is, very often, we justify our anger instead of accepting responsibility for it. So, in today’s verse in Ephesians chapter 4, verses 26 to 27, it says, ‘Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,   nor give place to the devil.’ In this verse, we see that the bible doesn’t condemn being angry, instead, it guides us on how to channel it or handle it righteously. As we said, it is a natural emotion that all of us face and in this verse, it warns us against letting anger lead us to a place of sin. It gives us some ways on how we can be angry but handle it in a way that honors God. Let’s look at that. The first one says, do not sin meaning, you and I have to control our responses and our reactions when we are angry. Sometimes, when we deny a wrong, when we become quick tempered, when we rage, when we avenge some harm that we’ve suffered or we hold on to resentment or we react in an impulsive or harsh manner, anger becomes misused. Let’s take a moment to pause before we act or say anything. What else does this verse instruct us to do? It says, do not let the sun go down on your anger meaning that we should swiftly be able to resolve our anger. Prolonged anger can fester resentment and bitterness. So, it is important to seek reconciliation and peace as soon as possible. The third thing it teaches us is not to give an opportunity to the devil. We need to guard against the enemy. Unresolved anger is that which the enemy uses, the enemy gets a foothold in our lives, it opens the door to further temptation and sin. How do we apply this? The next time we see anger rising up, let’s take time to identify and acknowledge that we are feeling angry and this could be a result of anything we may have faced. Whatever the cause may be, let’s take a moment to pause and ask God for wisdom and patience to deal with the person. Let’s strive to resolve the issue. Let’s learn to deal with anger in the way God desires of it. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for this emotion that you have put into us. Thank you that you have taught us a way of how to handle it effectively and righteously. May we be careful and have wisdom to know that we do not let ourselves sin and may we have the wisdom to understand, to keep away from giving the enemy a foothold to work in. May we forgive and be willing to resolve as quickly as possible by your grace, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
